Salivary gland tumors are classified as rare tumors that begin in the salivary glands. These tumors can begin in any of the salivary glands in the mouth, neck or throat. The function of salivary gland is to make saliva, which aids in digestion, keeps the mouth moist and supports healthy teeth.

There are 3 pairs of major salivary glands under and behind the jaw

  • Parotid
  • Sublingual
  • Submandibular

Salivary gland tumors most commonly occur in the parotid gland, accounting nearly 85% of all salivary gland tumors. But, 25% of parotid tumors are malignant (cancerous).

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of benign salivary gland tumor. It is typically a slow growing tumor and occur most often in the parotid gland. It is also known as mixed tumor which describes its pleomorphic appearance as opposed to its dual origin from epithelial and myoepithelial elements.

The tumor is usually solitary and presents as a slow growing, painless and firm singular nodal mass. It is usually mobile unless found in the palate and can cause atrophy of the mandibular ramus when located in the parotid gland.

What are the symptoms of Pleomorphic Adenoma?

  • A lump or swelling on or near the jaw or in the mouth or neck.
  • Muscle weakness on one side of the face
  • Persistent pain in the area of the salivary gland
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Trouble in opening the mouth widely

Diagnosis and Treatment of Pleomorphic Adenoma

Various tests such as physical exam, imaging tests, collection of sample of tissue testing etc. tests are done to diagnose pleomorphic adenoma.

Treatment of pleomorphic adenoma by modern treatment depends upon the size, stage and type of the salivary gland tumor. Treatment generally involves surgery or radiation therapy but surgery is difficult to perform as several important nerves are located in and around the glands. Moreover, removing tumors that involve important nerves may damage the nerves, causing partial paralysis of the face.
