In this article we will learn about a lot of things which increase the risk of this syndrome along with what can be done to avoid it and how it can be managed with Ayurvedic herbs or formulations.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Moving forward, let us know how this condition happens?

Reason behind computer vision syndrome (CVS)

The reason is simple, it is one of the motion injuries that your eyes get while working. In this your eyes follow a same path, which mentions a repetitive motion and this repetitive motion worsen the eye conditions.

When you work on computer screens or laptop screens or on screens then your eyes are subjected to focus and refocus again and again. The eyes move back and forth as you read. On ebay look down, read a paper and then back to screen for typing. The eyes react to images constantly moving and changing, focus shifts, signals are sent to the brain for image verification and it requires involvement of many eye muscles and reflexes.

Things get worse, unlike a book or piece of paper, when the screen adds contrast, flicker and glare. It is proven that we blink far less in frequency while we are using the computer screen. This causes eyes to dry out and the vision is blurred periodically over time while working.

No doubt on screen work gets difficult as you grow old as the natural lenses in your eyes become less flexible.

Now, it’s time to discuss the symptoms of computer vision syndromes.

Symptoms of CVS or computer vision syndromes

The causes may include some specific things which depict short term and long term damage. The symptoms include:

For short term symptoms or early symptoms include blurred vision, double vision, dry or red eyes along with eye irritation.

Long term symptoms, back and neck pain along with pain in eyes that radiated to the back side of head or lower side of head. The worst which can happen is, you may face problems with your performance too.

Finally the question arises that what can be done to avoid this situation or manage this situation?

For that obvious reason we will guide you with some techniques but also with some herbs or formulations. Firstly about the techniques. The techniques that help in computer vision syndrome are as following:

  1. Cut the glare
  2. Desk rearranging
  3. Eye breaks
  4. Alter the settings

Cut The Glare

The lighting around you to be changed, so as to reduce its effect on the computer screen. In case if the light from a nearby window casts a glare then there is a desperate need to move your monitor and also close the shades. For this purpose a glare filter to your monitor.

Desk Rearranging

The best arrangement of your desk is 20-24 inches below the level of your eyes. You should not be stretching or straining your neck or your eyes to see your screen.

Eye Breaks

Eye breaks are really important. This includes taking a break from all types of on screen activities and following 20 20 20 rule which is looking 20 minutes away from the screen and focusing an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Don’t forget to blink often to keep your eyes moist.

Alter The Settings

Have your screen placements according to your comfort instead of factory installed settings. Also adjust your screen brightness, contrast and font size.

Eye strain relieving exercises

Flexing

How can it be performed?

Face forward and look straight. Now move your eyes up and down without moving your head. Also move your eyes left and right without moving your head. Do this for 10 times. This technique is called flexing.

Blinking

Blinking is a kind of exercise which is used to reduce eye strain. Generally we don’t blink when we are staring at a computer screen. The benefits of blinking are that it reduces the strain over eyes. All that you have to do is, blink every 5 seconds after looking for 2 minutes at the screen.

Focusing near and far

It can be done either sitting or standing. Put your thumb in front of your face at about 10 inches of distance and focus on it. Now try to focus on an object which is 10 feet away from you. Repeat this far and near focusing for 2-3 minutes.

Palming

This is a very successful yoga technique. In palming, place your palms over your eyes and your fingers will cover your forehead while the base of your palm rests on your cheek bones. Do not put much pressure on your eyes and ensure that your eyes can blink freely. Repeat the exercise for 2-3 minutes. After this, rub your palms together and place them over your eyes. Do this for three to five times.

Zooming

Sit in a comfortable position and stretch your arm and raise your thumb in hitch hikers position. Focus on the thumb and bring it close until it is three inches away from your eyes. Now slowly move your forearm and thumb back to the starting position. Do this exercise numerous times.

Figure Of Eight

Figure of eight is a great exercise to ensure flexibility of eye muscles. It is a very simple exercise to do. Draw an imaginary figure of 8 on a blank wall which is 10 feet away from you and now trace its path without moving your head. Do this in one way and reverse direction too. It should be done for at least two minutes.

Rest

It’s the last one but the most important one. Your eyes deserve rest too like the rest of your body. When you are working too much on computers or on screen after every 50 minutes of work give your eyes a rest of at least 10 minutes.
