Ayurvedic Treatment of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

Overview

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a rare disorder of the brain. This disorder is characterized by serious problems with walking (gait), coordination of eye movements (visual disturbances) and body balance (inability to balance the body properly while standing or walking).

People affected by Progressive Supranuclear Palsy experience serious and permanent problems with control of gait and balance, and are also unable to coordinate the movement of their eyes. This uncommon brain disorder also known as Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome generally gets worse with time (it is a progressive disorder), and can lead to life-threatening complications, like pneumonia and difficulties in swallowing. The disorder mostly affects people aged 60 years or more.

The exact cause of the occurrence of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy is not known. However, it is believed that the disorder apparently results from damage to or deterioration of the brain’s parts above the ‘nuclei’ nerve cell clusters (that is, the supranuclear parts of the brain). The nuclei affected in this disorder mainly control the body movements, eye movements, and thinking/reasoning ability.

There are two characteristic symptoms of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy :-
