Abstract

Monoclonal Gammopathy is commonly seen in elderly people who have moderately raised levels of M proteins or abnormal immunoglobulin protein present in the blood. There are rarely any symptoms, but few people may experience peripheral neuropathy (pain or burning in hands and feet). M-protein is an antibody that indicates developing disease when present in blood or urine and is produced by abnormal, precancerous or cancerous cells.

What is Monoclonal Gammopathy?

Monoclonal Gammopathy is a condition when abnormal protein is present in the blood. It needs regular monitoring as it is an early sign of developing multiple myelome or smoldering myeloma; Monoclonal proteins, also known as M protein, are produced by WBC called plasma cells in the bone marrow. Monoclonal means that there is presence of only one type of abnormal protein.There are no symptoms or no adverse health effects, still regular monitoring is necessary to check for any sign of cancer or disease that may develop with time, as individuals having monoclonal gammopathies have higher risk of developing serious diseases of blood and bone marrow.
