Types of Fractures and Their Treatment With Ayurvedic Herbs

ABSTRACT

Fractures are one of the most well-known and obliterating wounds around the world. Musculoskeletal injuries affect bones, joints, muscles and tendons. In addition, the neurovascular bundle of the limb may also be damaged. Simply put, a fracture is a disruption of the continuity of the bone. Many people are confused between fracture and dislocation. A broken bone is known as a fracture and when a joint is displaced or exhibited from its normal position is known as dislocation. In this article, we will discuss the different types of fractures, their various causes, symptoms, and treatments.

INTRODUCTION

A fracture may be a complete crack or gap in the continuity between bones. Damage is often caused by pressure or stress. However, people with bone or cancer suffer damage, but less so. Bone is a special type of tissue with unique properties. There are five types: in-length bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones and sesamoid bones.

TYPES OF FRACTURES

CLASSIFICATION OF FRACTURE

1. Based on etiology

  1. Traumatic fracture- fracture caused by road traffic accidents, fights etc.
  2. Pathological fracture- a fracture through a bone weakened by metastasis
  3. Stress fracture

2. Based on displacements

  1. Undisplaced fracture
  2. Displaced fracture

3. Because of the relationship with the outside climate

  1. Open fracture
  2. Closed fracture

4. Based on the complexity of the treatment

  1. Simple fracture
  2. Complex fracture

5. Based on the pattern

  1. Oblique fracture
  2. Transverse fracture
  3. Spiral fracture
  4. Comminuted fracture
  5. Segmental fracture
  6. Butterfly fracture

CLINICAL FEATURES

  1. Pain and swelling
  2. Irregularity
  3. Deformity
  4. Loss of function
  5. Tenderness
  6. Abnormal mobility

LOCAL EXAMINATION

  1. Inspection- Abnormal swelling, Attitude, Shortening, overlying skin.
  2. Palpation- tenderness, bony irregularity, abnormal movements, crepitus, swelling, wound, pain elicited by manipulation from a distance
  3. Measurement- longitudinal, measurements of the circumference of the limb
  4. Movements

INVESTIGATIONS

  1. X-rays can confirm whether a person’s bone is broken.
  2. A CT scan is used to check your bones for injuries, sores, fractures, or other problems.
  3. MRI is best to diagnose stress fractures.

FACTORS INFLUENCING TIME FOR FRACTURE HEALING

  1. Age
  2. Constitution
  3. Fracture type (Site, Configuration)
  4. Displacement
  5. Soft tissue damage
  6. Apposition of fragments
  7. Immobilisation

COMPLICATIONS OF FRACTURES

Complications can occur immediately, early or late.

  • Immediate complications– Pain, Pallor, Paralysis, Pulseless, Paresthesia
  • Early complications- Local (gas gangrene, fracture blisters, venous thrombosis, visceral complications) and General (Fat embolism, Tetanus, Pneumonia)
  • Late complications- Local (joint stiffness, malunion, chronic infection, refracture, growth disturbance) and General (Accident neurosis)

AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW OF FRACTURE

The cure for human disease is as old as human evolution. The oldest medicine is Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, the fracture is correlated with ‘Bhagan’. According to Acharya Sushruta, they classified the Bhagna into two types: Kanda Bhagna (fracture) and Sandhimoksa (Dislocation). Here we will discuss Kanda Bhagna (Fractures).

NIDANA (ETIOLOGY)

Ayurvedic Remedies for Amyloid Polyneuropathy Disease

Abstract

Amyloid Polyneuropathy also known as Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP) is a group of hereditary amyloidosis that cause malfunctioning of sensory or autonomic functions of the body due to the deposition of amyloid protein in peripheral nerves. Polyneuropathy means the malfunctioning of many nerves simultaneously due to aggravated amyloid. The prevalence of Amyloid Polyneuropathy worldwide is not known. The death rate is high in prolonged cases. Treatment is essential for sensorimotor, autonomic, and visceral complications. Let us have a look and find out its causes and how it can be managed by Ayurveda.

Introduction

Amyloid Polyneuropathy is caused due to deposition of amyloid proteins in the peripheral nerves. Amyloid is an insoluble protein that aggregates in blood vessels and nerves. Various amyloid proteins particularly cause disease progress. Amyloid proteins can aggregate in any vessel of the body example – amyloid deposition in cardiac muscles can cause cardiomyopathy, deposition of amyloid proteins in urinary/genital nerves can cause urogenital disorders, deposition of amyloid proteins in ocular nerves can cause ocular manifestations, and so on. Amyloid Polyneuropathy is a severe disease. It may include several manifestations altogether that make it difficult to handle. The chemicals used for its treatment may worsen other symptoms in the body. So here in this article, we will discuss some ayurvedic treatment methods that can help in managing these conditions naturally without any side effects.

Amyloid Polyneuropathy Disease

Ayurvedic Aspect

Imbalance of tridosha and the aggravation of toxins in the body cause neuropathies. The imbalance occurs due to improper lifestyle and food practices. This leads to Rakt dushti and Sira dushti (vitiation of body nerves and blood due to deposition of amyloid proteins). Oral herbal medicines and external therapies together are effective in the recovery of sensory and autonomic functions. Rasayan herbs are used along with particular medicines for symptomatic relief. Proper pathya apathya is indicated according to a person’s condition. Brihana drugs are used to nourish nerves from the inside and reduce the deposition of amyloid protein by initiating its excretion from the body, which will improve the overall condition of the patient. A proper detailed description of herbal medicines and their action on the body are discussed further in this article.

Causes

  • Most of the cases are seen arising genetically as its genes are autosomal dominant and cause mutations. Inherited Amyloid Polyneuropathy is caused due to mutation in proteins – TTR, Gelsolin, and apolipoprotein A1.
  • Not all Amyloid neuropathy is genetic however, some are caused by the deposition of paraprotein, lymphomas, and myelomas.

Symptoms

There are sensory and autonomic dysfunctions in Amyloid Polyneuropathy that may include symptoms like

  • Sensory loss of pain and temperature
  • Weight loss
  • Cardiac problems
  • Numbness
  • Hypotension
  • Difficulty in balancing
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Eyesight issues
  • Renal complications
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Urinary disorders
  • Persistent nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sweating
  • Constipation

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is confirmed after clinical and laboratory examinations

  • Electromyography
  • Skin biopsy
  • Nerve biopsy
  • Muscle biopsy
  • Blood testing for genetic evaluation
  • Immunocytochemistry
  • Nerve conduction test
  • Quantitative sensory testing (QST)
  • Antenatal diagnosis is possible through chorionic villus sampling

Treatment

The treatment requires multiple modalities according to the symptoms and the type of amyloid protein the person is suffering from.

Symptomatic Treatment

  • Neuropathic treatment by a neurologist (with antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, etc.)
  • Cardiologist for cardiac problems
  • Liver surgeon for liver problems
  • Ophthalmologist for ocular dysfunctions

Organ transplants are recommended in severe cases
