Ayurvedic Treatment of GNE Myopathy

Abstract

GNE Myopathy is an inherited neuromuscular disorder that affects the skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles share 30-40% part in the total mass of the body. These muscles are connected to the bones and provide a wide range of functions and movements. These muscles work with voluntary actions (the person feels like doing it on their own). In this study we are going to discuss all about GNE Myopathy and how it affects the skeletal muscles. Also if any of you feel that you are facing the symptoms that we are going to mention in the article don’t worry just go through this study and get the solution of your problem out of it as we are going to discuss the best treatment by Ayurveda in this article. Now I have a detailed view on GNE Myopathy.

GNE-myopathy

Introduction

GNE Myopathy is the condition in which there is an inherited neuromuscular default. It occurs by the mutation (change) in the GNE gene. This gene plays a great role in the generation of sialic acid, which is the type of sugar required by muscle cells for producing energy. The condition is inherited via an autosomal recessive pattern. Autosomal recessive condition means two defective gene mutations must be there to cause a disorder. This is the main cause of GNE Myopathy. As this is an inherited condition which means it is present since birth. And most commonly it affects the skeletal muscles and restricts its functions. So after reading all about this condition, if you feel you are suffering from the same condition don’t worry you will also get your solution here. So In this article we are going to discuss all about GNE Myopathy and its Ayurvedic management.

Symptoms of GNE Myopathy

Symptoms of GNE Myopathy most probably appear in the 2nd and 3rd decade of life and may experience the following symptoms:

  • Progressive muscle wasting
  • Severe disability
  • Bilateral foot drop (difficulty in lifting the front part of the foot)
  • Disturbed gait
  • Decreased stability
  • Frequent falls
  • Difficulty in climbing stairs
  • Difficulty in running
  • Difficulty in rising up from the seated position

Causes of GNE Myopathy

As we read earlier, the main cause of GNE Myopathy is gene mutation and the gene mutation is of recessive type. In general the condition occurs due to transfer of defective genes from both the parents but if the person receives one normal and one defective gene then the patient is considered as the carrier of the disease but is asymptomatic. Symptoms usually appear when the genes from both parents are defective. Risk of having both defective genes is 25% and risk of having one defective gene is 50%. Also if one parent is experiencing GNE Myopathy and one parent is a carrier of GNE Myopathy then there is also a 50% chance risk to the child.

Diagnosis of GNE Myopathy

Most of the patients after appearing symptoms are diagnosed clinically after seeing such symptoms like foot drop, frequent falls, progressive muscle wasting. If a doctor is not able to be diagnosed clinically then a patient must be advised for genetic testing. Genetic testing should be done with simple non-invasive procedures muscle biopsy  by the help of saliva or blood sample. Additionally, MRI, pulmonary function tests, and echocardiogram are considered as the options to confirm the diagnosis.

Ayurvedic View of GNE Myopathy

According to Ayurveda GNE Myopathy is correlated to beeja dosha, which means the condition occurs with the defect in beejbhaga (sperm and ovum). Ashudh shukra and Ashudh artava (defected sperm and defected ovum) are considered as  the main causes of this condition. If there is any defect in the gametes (sperm and ovum) of parents then the child should inherit the disease. Beeja dosha due to the fact that if the mother conceived when her uterus or artava (gamete) is not totally vitiated but troubled by imbalanced doshas because of her improper diet intake. If there is any defect due to beej bhaga then cause beeja dosha and the deformity will occur in the fetus. As it is an inherited disease so we may treat the symptoms of the disease but not totally cure it. There are some natural herbs that cure the symptoms of the disease and make the affected person’s life better by improving the quality of life.

What is GNE MYOPATHY? – Causes, Diagnosis & Ayurvedic Treatment

Abstract

GNE myopathy is a hereditary illness that mostly affects the skeletal muscles. It is also known as HIBM, Nonaka myopathy, IBM2, and distal myopathy with rimmed vacuoles. The disease’s earliest symptoms develop between the ages of 20 and 40, and it affects both men and women at the same rate. Progressive muscular weakness, which often increases over time, decreasing grip strength, and frequent loss of balance are all symptoms of this illness. There is currently no cure for the condition, and therapy focuses on symptom management. Ayurveda, on the other hand, may aid in the management of this ailment.

Introduction

GNE myopathy is a hereditary muscle disorder in which GNE refers to the defective gene. It is a rare condition that affects around one person in a million individuals throughout the globe. It causes muscle weakness and atrophy in the legs and arms. The beginning of symptoms is generally in young adults, however, some people have seen a later onset. Foot drop is generally associated with increased tripping and a steppage gait at first. The problem worsens with time, resulting in proximal leg muscular weakness, difficulty ascending stairs or rising from a seated position and weakening of the hands and shoulder muscles.

How an you recognize myopathy’s indications and symptoms?

  • Disturbed gait and impaired stability are common in GNE myopathy patients, as are frequent falls, difficulties ascending stairs, jogging, and getting up from a sitting posture.
  • The muscles of the lower limbs are the first to be damaged, with the exception of the quadriceps, which seem to be largely unaffected.
  • Neck muscles might be impacted in the latter stages of the illness.
  • Finally, as the illness progresses, skeletal muscle function may be lost completely, leaving the patient completely reliant on others.

Acquired myopathies may exhibit symptoms that are comparable to hereditary myopathies, as well as the following

  • Muscle deterioration
  • Motor sluggishness
  • Impairment of the respiratory system
  • Dysfunction of the bulbar muscles (malfunction of the muscles responsible for swallowing and speech)

Causes of GNE myopathy

Causes

Changes (mutations) in the GNE gene, which codes for the enzyme glucosamine (UDP-N-acetyl)-2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase, cause GNE myopathy. Infection, muscular damage, medicines, electrolyte imbalances, and thyroid illness are among the other reasons.

Diagnosis

GNE myopathy testing is appropriate for patients who have foot drop (in young adults) and distal extremity muscle weakness (in those who have advanced stages of the illness). Genetic testing is an excellent initial step in determining the severity of GNE myopathy in individuals. This includes the use of minimum or no invasive treatments, simply requiring a blood or saliva sample, and yielding results in hours or days.

Factors at Risk

Some myopathies, such as some forms of muscular dystrophy, are hereditary. Other myopathy risk factors include:

  • Myasthenia gravis, scleroderma, and thyroiditis are examples of autoimmune diseases.
  • Endocrine problems
  • Toxin exposure, such as pesticides and flame-retardant chemicals
  • Infections
  • Deficiency in vitamins
  • Antihistamines and long-term corticosteroids are among the drugs used.
  • Glycogen and lipid storage disorders are examples of metabolic diseases.
