Natural Cure For Myasthenia Gravis With Herbal Remedies

Abstract

Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular disorder associated with weakness of voluntary muscles. The most active muscles generally are most severely affected such as those involved in facial expression, swallowing, and respiration. The course and severity of the disease are extremely variable. In some patients the muscular weakness may be confined to the extra ocular muscles, and the disease is not progressive and relatively benign. In others, the disorder rapidly becomes generalized to involve virtually all of the somatic musculature and is fatal. The basic tendency in this problem is muscular weakness. In this article we will discuss the Myasthenia gravis, its basic associated concerns and Ayurvedic point of view.

myasthenia gravis

Introduction

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune, neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles that worsens after periods of activity and improves gradually. These muscles are responsible for functions involving breathing and moving parts of the body, including the arms and legs. At first the weakness takes the form of failure of contraction after sustained effort, but in more advanced stages the muscles will no longer contract, even after prolonged rest. The disease may occur at any age. The peak age of onset is 20 years, and among these individuals the female to male ratio is 3:1. A second smaller peak occurs in late adult life when males predominate. Although the exact cause is not known, the various evidence supports that Myasthenia gravis results from a reduction of available acetylcholine receptors in neuromuscular junctions. Acetylcholine is responsible for the transfer of the nervous impulse from the motor nerve terminals to the muscle endplate. Acetylcholine is stored in vesicles in the nerve terminals to the muscle endplate. It is stored in the vesicles in the nerve terminals and is released by a process of exocytosis at specialized release sites. We will discuss this acetylcholine further in this article.

Causes

The causes of Myasthenia gravis are unknown, although basic mechanism to cause the Myasthenia gravis is as follows

  • As it is an autoimmune problem, the basic cause is faulty transmission of nerve impulses to muscles. There is interruption in communication between nerves and muscles at the neuromuscular junction. It means there is disturbed in the connection between nerve cells and muscles.
  • Impaired muscle contraction– Neurotransmitters are the basic chemicals used to pass or communicate the information. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter released by nerve endings when impulses travel a motor nerve. Acetylcholine binds on the sets of acetylcholine receptors on muscle. It activates muscle contraction. In the condition like Myasthenia gravis, as it is an autoimmune disorder, antibodies secreted destroy the receptor for acetylcholine at neuromuscular junction. It leads to poor contraction of muscles and leads to conditions like Myasthenia gravis.
  • The concept of thymus is also there and is associated with control on immune function. It is responsible for production of T cells, a type of W.B.C which helps to protect the body from infection and acts as a line of defense for the body. Impaired defense may lead to autoimmune problems.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Myasthenia gravis are as below:

  • Paralysis or partial paralysis of eye movements.
  • Diplopia i.e. double vision.
  • Problem in swallowing and fatigue in neck
  • Associated in chewing.
  • Ocular myasthenia i.e. eye muscle weakness.
  • Ptosis o.r. drooping of one or both eyelids
  • Altered face expressions.
  • Breathlessness
  • Speech impairment
  • Overall body weakness.
  • Respiratory failure

Diagnosis

  1. Physical Examination– It is the most important way to find out Myasthenia gravis. In physical examination there is a clear picture regarding muscle strength and coordination, muscle tone, sense and movement of eyes.
  2. Edrophonium Test– Edrophonium chloride is injected to the person of Myasthenia gravis. It helps to pacify the symptoms of Myasthenia gravis by blocking the breakdown of acetylcholine and helps to increase the level of neurotransmitter.  This test also helps to check out ocular weakness.
  3. A Blood Test– Myasthenia gravis patients have elevated levels of acetylcholine antibodies. Another antibody called an anti-musk anti-musk antibody is found in maximum individuals who have Myasthenia gravis. It can be detected in blood tests and may signify the Myasthenia gravis.
  4. Diagnostic Imaging– Diagnostic imaging is done for the chest using CT scan or MRI. It helps to check the presence of thymoma (metastatic stages).
  5. Pulmonary Function Testing– as the name indicated it helps to check the pulmonary function or the breathing capacity of the patients in Myasthenia gravis.

Ayurvedic Aspect

According to Ayurveda Myasthenia gravis is associated with vata and kapha dosha vitiation. Vitiation of vata and kapha are associated with predominance of aam dosha due to incompatible aahar vihar (lifestyle and eating habits). Aam dosha which are basically the toxins or kapha dosha block the channels of dhatus and aggravate the vata by obstructing the path. This leads to several complications.

Management

In modern sciences the cholinesterase inhibitors are used to manage the conditions like Myasthenia gravis. Mestinon a drug is able to enhance the communication between muscles and nerves. The basic aim of management is to maintain the normal contraction of the muscles. Ayurvedic management includes the shaman (with the aid of medications via oral routes predominantly) and shodhana therapy (based on detoxification). Shaman therapy can be done by using the herbs mentioned in Ayurvedic texts to digest the aam (toxins) upto strengthening the nervous system. First step is to digest the aam dosha and then enhancement of the digestive fire is done. Shodhana includes Panchkarma predominantly, the procedures associated to manage the Autoimmune disorders are abhyang (massage), swedana (fomentation), virechana (purgation), basti (medicated enema), shirodhara etc. Various yoga poses are able to manage the conditions of Myasthenia gravis. The mutual approach with herbs and panchkarma help to promote the conditions of the neuromuscular system and is best to manage the Myasthenia gravis.

What is Myasthenia gravis?- Causes Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment

ABSTRACT

Myasthenia gravis is not known by many people. This article is going to give all the information’s regarding Myasthenia gravis and its related common questions which generally asked by people. Both allopathic and ayurvedic give an excellent results but ayurvedic treatment proves as the safest further no complication results  in Myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder. This term may be difficult to understand so breaks the term as auto means self and immune means body’s defense mechanism against antigens(foreign bodies).Whereas neuromuscular disorder involve the muscles and the nerves that control them. Planet ayurveda provides the best holistic treatment for Myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune  neuromuscular disorder which is most prevalent in young women aged 20-30 .It leads to muscle weakness hence inability to chew foods properly. Drooping of eyelids is also seen in Myasthenia gravis. Being an autoimmune disorder it generally affects body’s own immune system. In Myasthenia gravis ,body’s antibodies block the Ach acetylcholine receptors which is needed for muscle contraction.

Myasthenia gravis

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS?

  1. As we know, Myasthenia gravis causes weakness of the voluntary (skeletal) muscles.
  2. The cause of autoimmune disorders such as myasthenia gravis is unknown.
  3. In some cases, myasthenia gravis may be associated with tumors of the thymus .
  4. Patients with myasthenia gravis have a higher risk of having other autoimmune disorders such as thyrotoxicosis, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus),and rheumatoid arthritis.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS?

In most cases, the first noticeable symptom is weakness of the eye muscles. In others, difficulty in swallowing and slurred speech may be the first signs.

  • The onset of the disorder is sudden. Often symptoms are intermittent.
  • It is generally seen that diagnosis of myasthenia gravis may be delayed if the symptoms are variable.
  • The muscle weakness of Myasthenia gravis worsens with activity and improves with rest.
  • Muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expressions are affected. The muscles that control breathing and neck and limb movements can also be affected .

Weakness in affected muscles may cause:

  1. The patient may experience breathing difficulty because of weakness of the chest wall muscles.
  2. The patient may experience chewing or swallowing difficulty, causing frequent gagging and choking.
  3. The patient may experience difficulty climbing stairs ,lifting objects or rising from a seated position.
  4.  The patient may experience difficulty in talking.
  5. The patient may experience a drooping head.
  6. The patient may experience facial paralysis too..
  7. The patient may experience double vision or diplopia.
  8. The patient may experience difficulty maintaining a steady gaze.
  9. The patient may experience fatigue.
  10. The patient may experience hoarseness or a changing voice.
  11. The patient may experience eyelid drooping.

It is a necessary step for the people to understand the symptoms of Myasthenia gravis.

WHAT ARE THE INVESTIGATIONS FOR MYASTHENIA GRAVIS?

Physical examination may reveal muscle weakness that progressively worsens as the muscle is used.In many people with Myasthenia gravis , the eye muscles are affected first. The patient’s reflexes and sensation are normal.Weakness from Myasthenia gravis may affect the arms, legs , breathing or swallowing muscles, and any other muscle group.

  1. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies (may be present in the blood)
  2. CT or MRI scan of the chest
  3. NCS Nerve Conduction study.
  4. EMG (Electromyography )
  5. Let’s discuss the above investigations .
  6. Here CT (COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY ) may show abnormal growth of thymus cells or show evidence of  Thymoma.
  7. EMG is known as Electromyography which measures electrical activity in response to stimulation of the nerve of the muscle.
  8. NCS (Nerve conduction study) measures how fast an electrical impulse moves through nerve conduction in the nervous system. This gives a  clear indication about Nerve damage .During this procedure the nerve is stimulated with electrode patches around the skin.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR MYASTHENIA GRAVIS?

According to modern medicine the treatment for myasthenia gravis

MEDICATION

Corticosteroids and immunosuppressants are the first choice of drugs in the treatment for Myasthenia gravis. These medications help to reduce the abnormal immune response that is most observed by the patient  in Myasthenia gravis.

Moreover  cholinesterase inhibitors, such as pyridostigmine (Mestinon), have been used  to increase the  communication duration  between nerves and muscles.

1. Thymus gland removal

It is known as the removal of the thymus gland.  It  is part of the immune system that may be appropriate for many patients who are suffering  with Myasthenia Gravis. Once the thymus gland  is removed, patients generally  show less muscle weakness.Benign Tumors  are always removed because they may become cancerous.

2. Plasma exchange

Plasmapheresis is a procedure which is  also known as a plasma exchange. The process helps in the  removal of harmful antibodies from the blood.  This may result in an improvement in muscle strength of the patient. Whereas Plasmapheresis  is a short-term treatment. Here the body will continuously produce harmful antibodies and weakness may recur in the patient. Plasma exchange shows excellent results  before surgery as well as during times of extreme weakness of Myasthenia gravis.

3. Intravenous immune globulin

Generally this treatment Intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) is  not known by the patient. It is known as a blood product which comes from the blood donors. It’s generally used in autoimmune Myasthenia gravis . Although it’s not clear whether Intravenous immune globulin  is effective or not.It shows an excellent result in the creation and function of antibodies.

AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE FOR AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER

After discussion of the Modern aspect of Autoimmune disorder let’s understand about the ayurvedic perspective of Ama.According to Ayurveda Ama is known as the outcome of improper digestion. Here Incomplete or partial digestion of food leads to Ama .Other definition to describe Ama as which brings discomfort is known as Ama.

According to acharya Charak an ancient ayurvedic scholar He mentioned abnormal dosa present in grahani which manifest improperly digested food which may result as salivations, constipation, burning sensation, anorexia, constipation ,pain  may known as symptoms of ama.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF AMA DOSHA ?

According to ayurveda the cause of ama dosha is clearly mentioned by acharya charak. Ama dosha is caused by excessive consumption of food substances .In take of food which have the following qualities.

  1. Guru :Heavy
  2. Ruksha :Unctuous
  3. Sheeta :Cold
  4. Shushka :Dry
  5. Vidahi :Irritant
  6. Ashuchi :Unclean

Let’s understand the causes of ama. When a person consumes certain food such as Heavy ,cold ,dry and unclean etc food items may lead to production of ama dosha.

Moreover, Acharya charak has clearly mentioned that wholesome food in proper quantity doesn’t get digested when the person is afflicted with grief, anger, fear, sorrows , excessive sleep and excessive vigil.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF SAMA VATA LAKSHANA?

According to ayurveda our body is composed of three doshas.Vata, pita and kapha. When Vata dosha combines with ama it produces the following signs and symptoms :

  1. Tandra : Fatigue. It means the patient may experience fatigue.
  2. Staimitya:Here the patient may be inactive.
  3. Gaurav:Here the patient may experience a feeling of heaviness.
  4. Shopha:Here the patient may experience swelling.
  5. Shaitya:It means the patient may experience coldness.
  6. Shopha :Here the patient may experience swelling.
  7. Agnihanibhi: Here the patient may experience loss of power of agni.

TREATMENT PRINCIPLES OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS

According to ayurveda treatment principle of Myasthenia gravis is

  1. Mamsa kshya chikitsa. Here the muscle loss treatment is done .Ashwagandha (Withania somniferum),Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) etc show an excellent result in the Mamsa kshaya.
  2. Agni deepan chikitsa with the help of Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Pippali (Piper longum) etc help patients in curing Agni di panam.(Increase of digestive strength)
  3. Ama pachana sroto shodhan :It means srotas (minute channels in the body)  should be purified with the help of a purification procedure.
  4. Katu rasa (pungent taste) is given initially to promote fire in dhatu (body tissues in the body).
