But when there is over-exertion or unbearable stress, this may cause pain in the back, limited physical activity, and curvature in the spines. In this article, we will be discussing one of the disorders of the spine that is Scheuermann’s disease in detail. We will see at the end of the article what the Ayurvedic correlation is between Scheuermann’s disease as well as treatment of Scheuermann’s disease. So, be with me till the end.

INTRODUCTION

Scheuermann’s disease is a skeletal disorder in which there is abnormal or we can say excessive curvature of the spine. It is also known as juvenile discogenic disease or juvenile Kyphosis. The curvature in this disease is measured in degrees and there is 45 degrees or more curvature seen in Scheuermann’s disease. The thoracic spine is commonly involved in this disease but sometimes the thoracic as well as lumbar region is also involved. The exact cause of Scheuermann’s disease is unknown, but genetic inheritance is mostly seen in the patients. Chronic back pain, neurological disorders, etc are some of the complications of Scheuermann’s disease.

Braces for back and physical therapy like physiotherapy, exercises, etc are also effective for managing Scheuermann’s disease. The genetic problem, abnormal bone growth, mineral deposition in the body (in the irregular pattern), bone ossification, etc are causes of Scheuermann’s disease. Stiffness in the body, poor posture, kyphosis (increased), redness over the skin, muscle cramps in the body, pain in the back (increased during physical activity), difficulty in balancing, etc is some of the symptoms of Scheuermann’s disease.  X-ray spine, MRI, CT scan, etc are some of the main diagnostic tests for confirmation of Scheuermann’s disease. Corticosteroids, analgesics, braces for the back, physical therapy, spinal fusion surgery, etc are the main line of treatment. Ayurvedic herbal formulations are very advantageous in resolving the disease from the root cause and aid in a healthy life.

Ayurvedic Aspect of Anxiety and Panic attacks

In Ayurveda, Anxiety is an imbalance of Vata dosha. During a panic attack, the Vata dosha impairment results in a sudden extreme stress response and agitated state of mind. Ayurvedic principle of diagnosing and treating a disease based on three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The balanced state of these doshas signifies a healthy state whereas the imbalance of these doshas leads to a disease. When Vata dosha is  disturbed the person feels ungrounded, has trouble sleeping and has a hyper-excitable nervous system.
