Ayurvedic Approach for Mesothelioma – Symptoms & Causes

Overview

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs in the mesothelium. Mesothelium is a thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of internal organs.

Mesothelioma

It is one of the deadly forms of a cancer. It generally affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs (pleura) while other types of mesothelioma affect the tissue of the abdomen, tissue of the heart and around the muscles.

Ayurvedic Approach

The vitiated Vata or the air body humor is responsible for the abnormal and rapid growth of cancer cells and the Kapha element is what causes the tumour to increase in size and density. It is because of the excessive Kapha element involved that the cancers do not suppurate.

The vitiated doshas then go on to involve the other seven dhatus or body tissues mainly Rakta (blood tissue) and Mamsa (muscle tissue).

What are the Symptoms of Mesothelioma?

The signs and symptoms of mesothelioma depend on the organ of the body on which it attacks. The symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma which affect the tissue that surrounds the lungs include :

  • Painful coughing
  • Unusual lumps of tissue formed under the skin on the chest area
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chest pain under the rib cage
  • Shortness of breath

Another form of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma which occurs in the tissue in the abdomen causes signs and symptoms such as :

Another type of mesothelioma includes tunica vaginalis which affects tissue surrounding the testicles. It may be first detected as swelling or a mass on a testicle.

What are the Causes of Mesothelioma?

The general cause of cancer is a series of genetic mutations that occur within a cell causing the cell to grow and multiply out of control.
There are certain risk factors that causes mesothelioma are:

  • Asbestos Exposure :- During the mining process, when the asbestos is broken up, dust is created. If this dust is inhaled or swallowed, the asbestos fibres will settle up in the lungs or in the stomach where they can cause irritation that may lead to mesothelioma.
  • Heredity :- If there is a mesothelioma in the family, then there is an increased risk of this disease.

Diagnosis and Treatment

There are certain imaging tests such as a chest X-ray or a CT scan of the chest or abdomen to rule out for abnormalities.

Treatment

Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease. Treatment is usually focussed on controlling the cancer. Surgery is done to remove mesothelioma when it is diagnosed at an early stage but sometimes it is not possible to remove all of the cancer.

Chemotherapy is also prescribed which involves the use of chemicals to kill the cancer cells.
