Metachromatic leukodystrophy is a rare genetic metabolic illness in which the myelin sheath, which covers almost all nerve fibres in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, inappropriately grows or is damaged, causing damage to the spinal cord and white matter. The accumulated sulfatide material appears as spherical, 15-20 micron-diameter granular masses that, when prepared from a frozen state, stain positively with the peripheral nervous system and metachromatically with an acid cresyl violet stain.
