Treatment of Arteriosclerosis in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

Abstract

Blood vessels are the artery that helps in transporting oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the other parts of the body. These arteries are muscular tubes that are lined by smooth tissue and consist of three layers. This includes endothelium which is the innermost layer, then is the media that controls the high pressures of the heart and the last is the adventitia. The endothelium is helpful for protecting the walls of vessels and preventing them from clotting. This layer can be damaged due to many different causes and leading to Arteriosclerosis. In this article, we are going to discuss this health issue more in detail along with its treatment through herbal medicine.

What is Arteriosclerosis

It is also known as cardiovascular arteriosclerosis which is caused due to the thickening and stiffening of the arteries. This reduces the flow of blood to the other tissues and organs of the body. This disease gradually causes weakness as well as hardening of other organs especially seen in the heart. Arteries are helpful in circulating the blood throughout our body but there is a plaque formed especially due to high cholesterol, fat, or other cellular waste. This building up of the material around the walls of the artery results in arteriosclerosis. This can lead to strokes, heart disease, and circulation problems, or even aneurysms which can lead to a life-threatening condition.

There are Three Types of  Including

  1. Arteriolosclerosis
  2. Moenckeberg medial calcific sclerosis
  3. Atherosclerosis

1. Arteriolosclerosis

Small arteries present in the body become calcified.

2. Moenckeberg medial calcific sclerosis

This is when the small to medium-sized arteries are hardened.

3. Atherosclerosis

It occurs when the large arteries become narrowed and hardened.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Arteriosclerosis?

When the patient suffers from mild atherosclerosis does not suffer from any symptoms. Some do not even show any signs until it is narrowed to the levels that it is clogged and has stopped supplying blood to the tissues or organs. Sometimes the blood clot blocks the flow of blood and even breaks apart resulting in heart stroke or attack. If the patient has moderate arteriosclerosis then these are the common symptoms

Signs and Symptoms of Arteriosclerosis

  • Heart:- Pain in the chest or mild pressure (Angina).
  • Arms or legs:- It is common to see peripheral artery disease which causes pain during walking and even decreased pressure on the limbs.
  • Brain:- There is sudden weakness and numbness of the legs and arms.  Along with that, there is also difficulty in speaking as well as slurred speech.
  • Kidney:- The patient might suffer from kidney failure and high blood pressure.

Complications

Here are some of the complications depending on the blocked artery:-

1. Carotid Artery Disease

When there is a narrowing of arteries close to the brain then the patient might suffer from carotid artery disease which causes the transient ischemic attack.

2. Coronary Artery Disease

When it is close to the heart then the patient suffers from coronary artery disease which sometimes results in heart failure or heart attack.

3. Aneurysms

It can cause a serious problem which is one of the serious problems as it is the bulging of the wall present in the artery. This may also burst out resulting in internal bleeding.

4. Chronic Kidney Disease

The narrowing of arteries present in the kidney will prevent the oxygenated blood from reaching them.

What Causes Arteriosclerosis?

It is a slow as well as a progressive disease that might begin from childhood and the exact cause of the disease is not known. There are some of the causes that might injure or damage the artery.

This Includes Causes like

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • High levels of triglycerides which is a type of lipid present in the blood.
  • Resistance to insulin
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Suffering from inflammatory diseases like lupus, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and lupus.

When the inner wall of the artery is damaged this causes the blood vessels and other substances to get collected. The tissues that are connected to it get blocked and do not receive enough blood so that it can function properly.

Eventually, these fatty deposits break and enter the bloodstream which might rupture the lining of blood pressure. This might also cause clotting of blood clotting which blocks the flow of blood to the heart resulting in a heart attack.

How can Arteriosclerosis be diagnosed?

The doctor might ask for a physical examination along with the family history of the patient and other test includes

  • Electrocardiogram
  • Blood test includes knowing the levels of CRP.
  • Echocardiogram
  • Doppler Ultrasound
  • Exercise stress test
  • Doppler Ultrasound
  • Cardiac angiogram
  • Coronary Calcium Scan
  • Ankle brachial index
