Abstract

Glanzmann’s illness, commonly known as Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia, is an uncommon disorder in which your blood clots improperly. The majority of cases are genetic, with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, however, acquired GT does occur. In today’s medical system, a full cure for such sickness is not feasible since platelet transfusion is used to treat this kind of disease. However, after a while, several patients reported that their platelet count had dropped again. Ayurveda has many mystical herbs that may help you increase your platelet count in a healthy way.

Glanzmann Thrombasthenia

Introduction

Glanzmann thrombasthenia is a platelet-related anomaly or condition. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are a kind of blood cell that make up a large part of the blood. Their primary job is to produce coagulation factors that form a clump to halt bleeding from broken blood vessels (clot). Platelets are responsible for the development of blood clots and the prevention of bleeding. It is a bleeding illness that begins at birth and is characterized by persistent or spontaneous bleeding. People with Glanzmann thrombasthenia bruise quickly, have regular nosebleeds (epistaxis), and their gums may bleed.

Glanzmann Thrombasthenia: What does Ayurveda have to say about it?

We may associate it with “rakta pitta” according to our old classical literature (hemorrhagic disorders). It is a “rakta” disorder (blood). Pitta dosha has its seat in the blood, thus if it becomes vitiated, it will cause an illness in the bloodstream as well. Pitta is also called ‘lohitpitta’ because it comes into touch with blood and affects it, causing a disease.

Causes Of Glanzmann Thrombasthenia

Glanzmann thrombasthenia is caused by a protein that is typically found on the surface of platelets not being present. Platelets require this chemical to cluster together and form blood clots.

Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa genes are found on chromosome 17 of your DNA. Glanzmann’s disease may be caused by mutations in these genes.

If your family has a history of Glanzmann’s illness or associated conditions, you’re more likely to inherit it or pass it along to your offspring.

Symptoms & Signs Of Glanzmann Thrombasthenia

Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia is characterized by a proclivity for bruising and irregular bleeding. This symptom may appear shortly after delivery or after a short length of time. The following are some of the various indications and symptoms that have been observed:

  • Bruising
  • Nose bleed, also known as epistaxis, is a condition in which the nose bleeds
  • Gums that are bleeding
  • Intermittent bleeding in the gastrointestinal system
  • Bleeding from tiny blood vessels under the skin causes red or purple patches on the skin
  • Heavy menstrual flow among women
  • After an accident or operation, there is very heavy bleeding
  • After giving birth to the infant, there was a lot of blood

Diagnosis Of Glanzmann Thrombasthenia

Usually, the patient is encouraged to undergo tests to determine the time of clotting, such as prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time, once the doctor notices irregular bleeding. These tests may assist in determining how long it takes for a person’s plasma to clot. These tests, on the other hand, reveal that a person with Glanzamann’s thrombasthenia has a long time.

Glanzmann’s Disease Treatment

Glanzmann’s illness does not have a particular therapy. For individuals who experience significant bleeding episodes, doctors may recommend blood transfusions or donor blood injections. People with Glanzmann’s illness have reduced bleeding and bruising when damaged platelets are replaced with normal platelets. These therapies, however, just give symptomatic alleviation to the patient; Ayurveda, on the other hand, works extremely liberally by reaching the root of the problem.

Herbal Remedies for Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia – Bleeding Disorder

Abstract

Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia (GT) is an inherited blood clotting disorder which is characterized  by impaired function of specialized cells called as platelets that are essential for blood clotting (coagulation). The symptoms generally include abnormal bleeding and if left untreated for a long time can prove fatal. GT can be managed in a safe and effective manner with the help of Ayurvedic mode of treatment. In this article, lets’ know about this disease in brief and discuss Ayurvedic herbal remedies for the disease.

Introduction

Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia is a bleeding disorder which is characterized by spontaneous bleeding starting from birth. In Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia a person tends to bleed easily, may also present with easy skin bruising, can have frequent nosebleeds (epistaxis) and bleeding gums. Such patients can present with purple or red spots on skin which are usually due to bleeding underneath skin or swelling caused by bleeding within tissues. People with this disorder tend to bleed a lot following injury or surgery. Females with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia have excessive bleeding during menses and bleed more than usual after child birth. This excessive bleeding can result in extreme blood loss and can be fatal.

Symptoms of Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia

Causes of Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia

This condition is a result of gene mutation. The Mutation in ITGA2B or ITGB3  results in  this condition. This gene is responsible for making two parts (subunits) of receptor protein integrin alphallb/beta3. This protein is abundant on the surface of platelets. Platelets are the small cells which circulate in blood and are an important component for clot formation. During coagulation integrin helps the platelet to combine together. The clot formation protects the body after injury by sealing off the damaged blood vessels and hence bleeding stops.

The gene mutation results in the deficiency of integrin alphallb/beta3. Due to its deficiency the platelets cannot clump together thus resulting in prolonged bleeding.

In some cases of Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia no mutation is seen in integrin alphallb/beta3. In such cases the cause for the condition is not known.

Types of Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia

Type 1:  In this type people have less than 5 percent of integrin alphallb/beta3 levels. This is the most common type.

Type 2: In this type people have 5-20 percent of integrin alphallb/beta3 levels.

Variant type: In this type the body produces an adequate amount of integrin alphallb/beta3 but it is nonfunctional.

Symptoms of Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia

The symptoms in this case include

  • Tendency to bleed starts right after birth or short time.
  • Purple or red spots on skin
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bleeding nose (epistaxis)

  • Intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding resulting in melena
  • In women excessive menstrual bleeding
  • Excessive bleeding during childbirth and after childbirth
  • Intermittent uterine bleeding
  • Blood in urine
  • In severe conditions hemorrhage and this can be fatal.

Treatment of Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia
