ABSTRACT

Dermatitis is an inflammation or irritation of the skin caused by various external and internal factors. It is caused by an active immune system, infections, allergies, irritating substances, and more. In general, dermatitis can cause symptoms like rashes, blisters, itching, scaling, swelling, pain, burning sensation, etc. It is quite disturbing and discomforting. Dermatitis is a non-contagious skin condition. There are many types of dermatitis like atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, diaper dermatitis, etc. Phytophotodermatitis is one of them. It is a type of contact dermatitis. We shall be discussing here the detailed description of phytophotodermatitis, its causes, and its management in contemporary as well as traditional systems of medicine.

Phytophotodermatitis

Introduction

It is very much clear from the name itself phyto stands for plant, photo stands for ultraviolet rays or sunlight and dermatitis stands for inflammation of the  skin. Phytophotodermatitis is a non immunogenic inflammation of the skin that occurs due to contact with certain plants which contain photosensitising substances called furocoumarins (psoralens) which get activated following the exposure of sunlight (especially ultraviolet rays ). Several hours after exposure, burning erythema occurs, followed by edema and formation of vesicles (bullae). Wet skin, heat, sweating enhance the phototoxic effect. This results in hyperpigmentation which may persist for several weeks to months. According to the ayurveda dosha involved here is bhrajaka pitta (type of pitta that lives in the skin) which causes rakta dhatu dushti.

Causes and Aggravating Factors

  • Exposure to phytotoxic plants and their associated products
  • Heat
  • Sunny weather
  • Using certain perfumes or oils that contain certain chemicals.

NOTE:- Most phototoxic plants belong to the family mbelliferae, Rutaceae, compositae, and moraceae families. Fennel, fig, wild carrot, lime, etc are some of the phytotoxic plants.

Signs and Symptoms

Usually the symptoms of phytophotodermatitis start within 24 hours and peak around 48-72 hours. Some of the symptoms are as follows:

  • Itching
  • Redness or discolouration
  • Swelling
  • Blister over large area
  • Burning sensation
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Crusted patches of skin when blisters busted
  • Hyperpigmentation

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of phytophotodermatitis is based on the history of the person by  asking about exposure to plants or sunlight or any chemical substance  and carrying out physical examination. If still not clear further tests may be required like patch test or skin biopsy.

Differential Diagnosis

Phytophotodermatitis is often misdiagnosed for certain conditions given below:

  • Cellulitis
  • Burns
  • Fungal skin infection
  • Photosensitivity due to certain drug
  • Urticaria (hives)

Preventive Measures

  • Avoid the contact with plant that may causing skin reaction after identifying
  • Washing the skin especially hands after the contact
  • Using sunscreen lotion with high SPF
  • Covering up the skin while going out

Management

  • Cold compression or ice pack over the affected area can provide some relief
  • Corticosteroids (oral)
  • Anti inflammatory
  • Calamine lotion (topically)
  • Topical steroids
  • Antiseptic lotions
  • Wear loose clothes

Ayurvedic Aspect and Management of Phytophotodermatitis

Ayurveda is an alternative system of medicine with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. Ayurveda treatises describe three elemental dosha & nbsvata pitta and kapha and state that balance of doshas restores health while imbalance results in disease. As in phytophotodermatitis the dosha involved here is pitta as it easily gets vitiated by hot conditions like sunlight. And the pitta involved is particularly  bhrajaka pitta which is seated on our skin. Aggravation of pitta dosha vitiated rakta dhatu giving all the symptoms like itching, redness etc. Phytophotodermatitis is called kushta vyadhi in Ayurveda

Some herbs like kumari(Aloe barbadensis), khadir (Areca catechu), haridra (Curcuma longa), neem (Azadirachta indica), sariva (Hemidesmus indicus) and various others are helpful in managing symptoms. Some classical Ayurvedic  formulations that are very potent are gandhak rasayan, mahamanjisthadi kwath, khadirarishta, chandan asav, and many others.

Home Remedies

  • Aloe Vera gel should be directly applied over the affected part. Aloe vera gives an excellent cooling effect and even repairs the damaged cells
  • Apply sandalwood paste with rose water or cucumber juice

What Is Botox? What Are The Substitute In Ayurveda To Have Wrinkle Free Skin?

ABSTRACT

Throughout the world, Botox has been emerged as an escape from the aging process due to its resultant effect on the skin. It is used as an anti-aging and anti-inflammatory procedure by women and men. It is an estimate that approximately 11 million people throughout the globe have used Botox to date making it one of the most in-demand non-surgical procedures for cosmetic purposes.

INTRODUCTION

Everyone today is working hard to keep themselves beautiful and youthful-looking. This has resulted in a rise in the market for cosmetic products and treatments. There have been certain surgeries as well in prevalence for cosmetic means and Botox among these is the most popular one. Its popularity and availability have been increasing with leaps and bounds. When it was introduced, Botox was really exclusive and only available to a certain class of people but now it has been a part and parcel of many people’s cosmetic routines. Botox is equally popular in both men and women.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Let’s talk about Botox that what exactly is it and how it helps to prevent aging signs on the skin? Botox is a muscle relaxant that reduces wrinkles of the skin and helps in treating muscular conditions. These injections block the nerve impulses that are sent to a muscle to contract and hence preventing the muscle contraction. It is a protein made up of botulinum toxin which is produced by the bacteria named Clostridium botulinum. It is a sort of toxin which causes botulism and paralyzes muscles.

This toxin when used in small doses and correctly have many cosmetic properties. Botox injections are known to treat skin wrinkles, eyelid spasms, crossed eyes, bladder issues, and excessive sweating. Now the question arises how Botox works? It prevents the collagen breakdown which usually breaks during expression and speech and this breakdown of collagen leads to sagging of skin and hence skin wrinkles. In simple words, it works by freezing the muscle found in the face and therefore preventing loosening of skin.

Wrinkle Free Skin

Its popularity is due to the results which are fast however it is not permanent you have to go for the next sitting after three to four months. Also, Botox is not effective in the case of wrinkles caused by sun damage or after injury. Even after its huge popularity, people hesitate to opt for it because of the long term damage that it does to the body. The initial side effects that can be noticed just after having a Botox injection are drooping of eyelids and swelling, tiredness, fatigue, headache, pain in the neck, double vision, stomach troubles, flu-like complaints, numbness, malaise, unwanted weakness of surrounding muscles, dry eyes and allergic reactions like itching, rashes or respiratory troubles.

One should contact the cosmetic provider immediately who has given the injections. Also, the Botox injections can be really heavy on your pockets are the averages charges of these cosmetic injections are really high and non-affordable by many of us. It can charge you up to thousands of dollar per year which keep of increasing with your age.

In case a person receiving Botox injection develops antibodies against it then the further injections given prove to be ineffective. One more big reason not to go for Botox is that it doesn’t make you look younger but puffy, artificial, and too fake smooth. Botox takes aging gracefully from you away as one day with or without it getting old is inevitable and not any injection or surgery can stop it but taking Botox arouse a sense of insecurity in you for your wrinkles and skin.
