AYURVEDIC ASPECT AND MANAGEMENT OF NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER

Ayurveda is an ancient science of healing that has existed for 3000 years. Ayurveda revolves around three sharirik doshas vata, pitta, and kapha, and three mask doshas satva, rajas, and tamas. All personality disorders are directly correlated with the vitiation of manasic doshas that in turn vitiates shrink doshas. Acharya has best-described manas roga in ancient texts. Narcissistic personality disorder in Ayurveda is related to Unnmada roga. Unnmada is the manas vyadhi which is best understood as mana (mind), buddhi (understanding), sangya (consciousness), Guyana (perception), smriti (memory), bhakti (inclination), chesta (behavior), sheel (character), Zahara (conduct).

Our Acharya has mentioned sixteen manas prakriti with features that are based on a person’s behavior and mental activities. These are mainly of three types Sattvik prakriti  (signifies purity, wisdom, enlightenment), Rajas prakriti (signifies the quality of energy, passion, ambition, change), and Tamas Prakriti (signifies darkness, inactivity, inertia). These three have subtypes. Narcissistic personalities have features similar to Asur prakriti which is a subtype of rajas Prakriti. Some peculiar features of Asur Prakriti are as follows.
