ABSTRACT

As we all know, Human skin is the outer covering of the body’s surface that provides protection from the external environment. INTRODUCTION

Diapers, today are commonly used in Newborns, toddler, Patients and many old aged persons. Diaper rashes are one of the most common skin concerns and can occur in any of them due to the negligence of keeping the diaper area clean and not changing the diaper for too long. Most diaper rashes start to improve after a few days of at-home care or by changing the diapers more frequently. Diaper rashes can cause serious skin infection, if not taken seriously as it can result in peeling, flaking and scaly skin.

DEFINITION

Diaper Rash is the common form of inflamed skin with redness and rash present on the buttocks or genital area. This inflammation is caused by prolonged contact with the wet/damp diapers. These rashes occur at the site of exposure to a substance that is capable of producing an allergic reaction or inflammation of the skin. In some areas, the skin may become raw or even bleed. Diaper rash is the result of an irritation, infection and allergy of the skin covered in diapers.

CAUSES

In Ayurvedic context, Shloka no.70 (Ashtanga Hridaya) by Vagbhata, Uttara sthana explains- Gudakutta (Diaper Rashes). The Shloka explains that Gudakutta is caused by vitiation ( destruction) of Kapha dosha and Rakta dhatu and therefore, Ayurveda has many herbs that recover the vitiated dosha and dhatu and treat Gudakutta.
