Horse Diseases Affecting The Hock Joint Treatment By Ayurveda

Abstract

The hock, tarsal, or gambrel, is the joint found in mammals with four legs such as a horse, dogs, cats, etc. The Hock joint is also known as the tarsal joint. This is a larger joint of horses and all the movements occur here.  It always communicates with the proximal intertarsal joint. The tarsal joint has more complex ligaments than other joints in animals. In this article, we will discuss the diseases of horses that affect the hock joint in them. Also, we will discuss various ayurvedic medications for the management of these diseases and joint deformities.

Horse Hock Joint

Introduction

The hock joint or the tarsal joint in horses is formed from the combination of four joints, named the talocrural joint, proximal intertarsal joint, distal intertarsal joint, and tarsometatarsal joint. Some horses have all four joints connected while some have a difference, which completely depends on the type of horse. Common diseases or deformities of hock joints seen in horses are-

Bone spavin: It is Arthritis of the distal hock joint. It is more common in performance horses and is mainly seen in older horses and rarely in young horses.

Curb: It is a typical strain that thickens the ligament that runs down the back of the hock (plantar tarsal ligament). While this is not a fatal type and does not affect the performance of the joint.

Bog spavin: It is normal inflammation of the hock joint that can occur as a result of any disease, trauma, or infection, and may or may not be present with lameness.

Ayurvedic Aspect

Ayurveda blames Vata dosha aggravation and tri doshas imbalance for such joint-related problems and deformities. Tridoshas play the same role in the body of animals as in the body of human beings, yet the dose and diet for the pacification of doshas differ. Many internal and external medications are recommended the animals to manage such deformities effectively.
