How to Raise My Platelet Count Naturally?

Abstract

Human blood contains a number of different cells like RBCs (red blood cells), WBCs (white blood cells), and platelets that serve various purposes. Platelets serve an important role in the physiological process of hemostasis and also contribute to the formation of pathologic thrombus. Platelets are blood cells that help with clotting, and it is very essential to maintain their levels. However, some people have thrombocytopenia which means a low platelet count. If the platelet counts are low, it can result in not just bleeding from tiny cuts or bruises but also in sudden and excessive bleeding inside the gut or around the brain. Therefore it is essential to know how to increase platelet count naturally. In this article, we shall take a brief look at how you can increase the platelet counts in your blood through natural methods.

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Introduction

Low platelet count i.e. thrombocytopenia in medical terms, is a health disorder in which your blood platelets are lower than normal. Normally, we have around 1.5 lac to 4 lac platelets per microliter of blood. When the platelet count number lesser than 1.5 lac it is called thrombocytopenia.

Causes of low platelet count

A decrease in platelet count is a serious problem as it leads to blood loss from our bodies. There can be two reasons behind decrease in platelet count – either they are getting destroyed or enough are not getting produced. This could be due to various reasons including:-

  1. Reduced production of platelets due to
    • Anemia
    • Viral infections
    • Leukemia
    • Chemotherapy
    • Excessive alcohol consumption
    • Deficiency of Vitamin B12
  2. Any severe liver disease or cancer
  3. Breakdown of platelets due to health problems like
    • ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura)
    • TTP (Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
    • Bacterial infection in the blood
    • Reaction to medicines
    • Autoimmune disease
  4. Certain drugs for heart problems, seizures, and infections

Sign and Symptoms

Sigh and symptoms of low platelets include

  • Rashes and Flat Spots– Rashes and flat spots on the skin, about the size of a pinhead. These are mostly on your legs and feet, and they may appear in clumps. In medical terms, they are called petechial.
  • Bleeding most often bleeding from the gums or nose. Women with low platelet count may have heavier or longer periods or breakthrough bleeding. You may also see blood in your urine or stool.
  • Blotches and Bruises-The person might have large areas of bleeding under the skin that don’t turn white when they are pressed. The medical name for these is purpura.

Some other symptoms may include

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Prolonged bleeding from cuts
  • Black or bloody-looking bowel movements
  • Red or pink urine
  • Vomit with blood in it
  • Severe headaches
  • Muscle or joint pain

According to Ayurveda it can be co-related with “Raktpitta”, on the basis of symptoms like bleeding from nose and gums, blood in urine or stool etc.

According to Acharya Charak

  • (Charak Chikitsa- 04/ 7-8)- Pitta aggravated by etiological factors such as intake of hot, sharp, sour, pungent and excess salty substances in excess etc. reaches rakta (blood) and affects it because of a similar constitution. Due to heat of pitta the fluid portion from all the fomented dhatus oozes out in the form of blood.
  • (Charak Chikitsa- 04/ 15)- Movement of Raktapitta is directed upwards and downwards, upwards through seven orifices like ears, nose, eyes etc. and downwards through two orifices like anus, urethra.
  • (Charak Chikitsa- 04/ 17)-Raktapitta passing out excessively through both upwards and downwards including hair follicles as well, the patient is incurable.

Diagnosis

If you are suspected with a low platelet count, first of all physical examination is done. Unusual bruising or evidence of petechial, are the signs of capillary bleeding that often accompanies a low platelet count. Some diagnostic tests may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Blood-clotting tests
  • Blood smear
  • Ultrasound
  • Bone marrow aspiration
  • A bone marrow biopsy

Treatment

  • Blood or Platelet Transfusions– If platelet level becomes too low, replace lost blood with transfusions of packed red blood cells or platelets.
  • Medications– If the condition is related to an immune system problem, drugs are used to boost platelet count.
  • Surgery– If other treatments don’t help, surgery is recommended to remove spleen (splenectomy).
  • Plasma Exchange– Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura can result in a medical emergency requiring plasma exchange.

As there are many other side effects like fever, chills, weakness, nausea, headaches, weakened immune system of these medications and so many side effects of surgical procedures, one should take help of natural or natural products in order to increase the platelet count. Ayurveda is the best alternative that can help us to increase our platelet count.

Diet

  1. Milk- As we all know that milk is a rich source of calcium and protein and is important in maintaining the strength of bones and muscles in our body. In order to increase platelets, one should take a glass of milk regularly.
  2. Green Leafy Vegetables- Green leafy vegetables are a rich source of vitamin K, which are essential in the blood-clotting pathway and also have a property of increasing platelet counts to some extent.
  3. Vitamins A rich foods- Vitamin A rich foods such as carrots, sweet potato, and kale are also beneficial.
  4. Folate rich food- folate is an essential B vitamin for healthy blood cells. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate.Foods containing folate or folic acid include:
    • Spinach
    • Brussels sprouts
    • Beef liver
    • Yeast etc.
  5. Vitamin B-12-rich foods- Vitamin B-12 is necessary for the formation of red blood cells. and are found in the following products.
    • Beef
    • beef liver
    • Eggs Fish including clams, trout, salmon, and tuna
  6. Vitamin C-rich foods- Vitamin C plays a vital role in the immune function and also helps the platelets to work correctly. Many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, including:
    • Broccoli
    • Brussels sprouts
    • Citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits
  7. Some other food items may include-
    • Papaya Leaf Extract
    • Pomegranate
    • Pumpkin
    • Wheatgrass etc.

According to Acharya Charak, Samshodhan chikitsa (detoxification procedure) can also be done. Which is as follows

  • Virechana (Induced Purgation) -Virechana is the process of inducing bowel movements by herbal combinations. As the herbal combinations are taken through the mouth, detoxification happens through the anus. The herbs come in touch with the whole alimentary canal, so the whole mucosa, nerve endings, blood vessels, and associated tissues are involved/ stimulated in this process of Virechana. This process of Virechana (purgation) is done when the blood is oozing out upward.
  • Vamana (Induced vomiting) – Vamana is a procedure in which Doshas (waste products or toxins) are eliminated through mouth. This process of Vamana is done when the blood is oozing out downward.
