Hypophosphatemia Treatment in Ayurveda – Electrolyte Disorder

Abstract

Electrolytes are the essential requirement of our survival. An adequate amount of electrolytes is very much necessary. As their deficiency and higher concentration, both are harmful and leading to various electrolyte disorders. One such important electrolyte is phosphorus. The body requires phosphorus to repair and build teeth, bones, and improve nerve function, and plays a key role in the contraction of muscles. The kidney plays a role to maintain an adequate level of phosphate in the blood. But due to some kidney issues or chronic alcoholism and other such causes will lead to a deficiency of phosphorus in blood results in electrolyte disorder known as Hypophosphatemia.

In this article, we are going to discuss Hypophosphatemia, its symptoms and causes, and its herbal management.

Introduction

Phosphate is an electrolyte that is responsible for the production of energy and proper functioning of the nerve. It is also beneficial to maintain strong bones and teeth. The standard concentration of phosphate in the blood is 3.4 – 4.5 mg/dl. Hypophosphatemia is the condition of a low level of phosphate in the serum. When the level of phosphate in the blood goes below 2.5 mg/dl it is known as Hypophosphatemia

When the level of phosphate in the blood goes below 2.5 mg/dl it is known as HypophosphatemiaSigns and Symptoms of Hypophosphatemia

There Are Two Types Of Hypophosphatemia

  1. Acute Hypophosphatemia
  2. Chronic Hypophosphatemia

Acute Hypophosphatemia is mainly caused due to movement of phosphate from the inner side of the cell to the outer side of the cell also called transcellular shifts of phosphate.

Chronic Hypophosphatemia is most often caused due to the reduction of renal phosphate reabsorption.

Symptoms

Mild Hypophosphatemia is an asymptomatic condition. Symptoms may appear when your phosphate level drops very low. Some common symptoms are:

  • Muscle Dysfunction and Weakness
  • Pain in Bones
  • Easy Bone Fractures
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Tooth Decay or Late Teeth Eruptions in Babies.
  • Slow Growth and Short Height As Compared To the Other Children of Their Age.
  • Mental Confusion, Numbness.
  • Seizures

Causes

Some medical conditions that can cause Hypophosphatemia are

  • When your intestine absorbs less amount of phosphate.
  • When your kidney removes the excess amount of phosphate into your urine.
  • When phosphate moves from the inner side of the cell to the outer side of the cell.

Some common causes of Hypophosphatemia are

  • Over consumption of alcohol
  • Severe malnutrition, such as from starvation or anorexia.
  • Extreme burns
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication of diabetes)
  • Fanconi syndrome (kidney disorder)
  • Deficiency of Vitamin D
  • Hyperparathyroidism (an excess of parathyroid hormone)
  • Chronic diarrhea

Long term excess use of some herbal remedies may lead to low phosphate level such as

  • Several antacids
  • Diuretics
  • Bronchodilators, theophylline  (Asthma medicines)
  • Corticosteroids
  •  Different hormones such as Glucagon, Androgens, and insulin.
  • Nutrients such as Fructose, lactate, amino acids, glycerol, etc.
  • Bisphosphonates
  • Antiviral drugs like Acyclovir etc.
  •  Acetaminophen

Diet Modification

A little alteration in the diet may reduce the risk of Hypophosphatemia. These certain changes in diet are

  • Drink plenty of fluids i.e. drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Increase your intake of milk and its related products such as cream, milk, cheese, custard etc.
