The most common chronic or long lasting type of arthritis that occurs in children is JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis). It consists of various conditions involving inflammation, stiffness and pain in joints.
JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) can occur in various forms and patterns. It is very essential to see a doctor if your child develops swelling in joints or experiences pain or stiffness in joints.
INTRODUCTION
Idiopathic refers to an unknown pathology, i.e. where the cause is not known. When a child or adolescent under the age of 16 years is affected by Arthritis, it is known as JUVENILE IDIOPATHIC ARTHRITIS(JIA).
Similar to the arthritis that occurs in adults, JIA also is an autoimmune disorder. It occurs when the immune system works in an abnormal manner and leads to various joint related problems such as inflammation, stiffness etc.
CAUSES
JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) is an autoimmune disorder. In healthy conditions, the immune system of the body acts as a defense mechanism. It helps to fight infections and promotes healing of wounds. But in a condition like an autoimmune disorder, the immune system becomes abnormally overactive and starts to attack the healthy cells and tissues.
The exact cause of this abnormal over activity of the immune system is still unknown. Family history of arthritis plays a vital role in making the person more prone to the condition .Various scientists believe that molecules—TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-1 play a major role in causing inflammation in joints of children affected by JIA.
SYMPTOMS
JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) may occur in various patterns and hence symptoms differ according to the type of pattern. In all types of JIA, following symptoms can be seen-

- Swelling in joints

DIAGNOSIS
Various clinical examinations and lab investigations are performed to confirm the condition which are as follows:
- Radiography- X-Rays reports help in visualizing the condition of joints.
- Serological tests
- Blood tests such as hemoglobin levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rates (esr)- Raised ESR levels may be an indication of infection.
- CT scanning
- Ultrasound
TREATMENT
The management of juvenile arthritis is similar to that of adult rheumatoid arthritis.
In acute phases, i.e. short term phase
- Bed rest may be essential
- Prone lying
- Appropriate physiotherapy
In severe cases- Corticosteroids are used. In persistently active disease-Immunosuppressants are given.
AYURVEDIC ASPECT
In Ayurveda, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis can be correlated with Vata vyadhi. According to Ayurvedic principles, 3 elements: Vata,Pitta, Kapha are the fundamentals of the health of the body. The equilibrium between these three is responsible for the healthy state of the body while any hindrance to any of the three Vata,Pitta, Kapha will lead to the diseased state of the body.
When Vayu is circulating in the body without any hindrance and in its natural state and form, the person becomes capable of living a life of more than a hundred years. Hence, appropriately describing the major role that Vata plays in maintaining the healthy state of the body. It is very essential to maintain Vata in its natural state which is only possible by avoiding and restricting the consumption of factors that will lead to its disturbance. These factors are very well mentioned in ch.chi.28/15-17 for example:
- Ruksha ahara
- sheeta ahara
- Alp ahar i.e. less quantity
- adhik vyayam i.e. excessive exercise
- chinta i.e. stress
- diva swapna-sleeping in day
- upvasa i.e. fasting etc
