Pyoderma gangrenosum is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders are disorders that occur when our immune system mistakenly attacks its own body. In Pyoderma gangrenosum, there is an inflammation of the skin with painful pustules or nodules which further becomes ulcers and ulcers progressively grow. This disease is not infectious. This in fact is a serious ulcerating skin disease with deep ulceration with a well-defined border.
The exact cause for this disease is not known. But the researchers believe that it is associated with autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, Arthritis, etc.
It usually starts with a small, red bump over the skin. This may resemble a spider bite and after a few days this bump can develop into painful and large sores. It may develop anywhere on the body but commonly develop on the legs.

- Age and sex
This disease will be diagnosed with a proper medical history and a physical examination. There is no specific test for Pyoderma gangrenosum disease. But the doctor will suggest you some blood tests to rule out the cause of this disease. Doctor will also suggest a skin biopsy.
The treatment aim is to reduce inflammation, pain and promote wound healing. The drugs of choice are corticosteroids and ciclosporin. For topical application some ointments are used such as Clobestol, mupirocin and gentamicin can be effective. This treatment protocol gives symptomatic relief and if treated then recurrence is common.
