Pyoderma Gangrenosum : Causes, Risk Factors, Diagnosis & Treatment
Abstract
Pyoderma gangrenosum is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders are disorders that occur when our immune system mistakenly attacks its own body. When the immune system produces antibodies they attack the cells of its own body then the condition is known as an autoimmune disorder. There are many types of autoimmune disorders such as Ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, lupus, grave’s diseases, etc. The immune system normally guards the body against various germs like viruses and bacteria. When this system senses the foreign particles then it sends out an army to attack them. But in autoimmune disorders, our immune system releases the antibodies that attack the healthy part of the body such as joints, skin, intestines etc. So in this article, we are going to discuss one of the autoimmune disorders that are Pyoderma gangrenosum, and its Ayurvedic management.
Introduction
Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare condition of the skin in which large, painful sores develop on the skin. These skin ulcers mostly occur on the legs. These ulcers can develop quickly and clear up with treatment but recurrence is common in autoimmune diseases. In Pyoderma gangrenosum, there is an inflammation of the skin with painful pustules or nodules which further becomes ulcers and ulcers progressively grow. This disease is not infectious. This in fact is a serious ulcerating skin disease with deep ulceration with a well-defined border.
Etiology/Causes
The exact cause for this disease is not known. But the researchers believe that it is associated with autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, Arthritis, etc.
Clinical Features
It usually starts with a small, red bump over the skin. This may resemble a spider bite and after a few days this bump can develop into painful and large sores. It may develop anywhere on the body but commonly develop on the legs.
Risk Factors
These certain factors may increase the risk of developing this disease:
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Having arthritis
- Blood disorders
- Age and sex
Diagnosis
This disease will be diagnosed with a proper medical history and a physical examination. There is no specific test for Pyoderma gangrenosum disease. But the doctor will suggest you some blood tests to rule out the cause of this disease. Doctor will also suggest a skin biopsy.
Treatment
The treatment aim is to reduce inflammation, pain and promote wound healing. The drugs of choice are corticosteroids and ciclosporin. For topical application some ointments are used such as Clobestol, mupirocin and gentamicin can be effective. This treatment protocol gives symptomatic relief and if treated then recurrence is common.
