Abstract
The tenderness and swelling of one or more joints are known as arthritis. It commonly occurs between the ages of 30 -50 years old. With this disease, women are more effective than men. Arthritis is the most common of two types- Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In this article, we are going to discuss Rheumatoid arthritis and its management with Ayurvedic herbs and herbal formulations.
Introduction of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Where the tissue lining of both sides of the joints is attacked by the immune system is called rheumatoid arthritis. It also affects other parts of the body like the lungs, eyes, heart, skin, etc. It is a chronic and autoimmune disease. It usually occurs more in females than males. It initially affects small joints.
Types of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is of two types:-
1. Seropositive rheumatoid arthritis
2. Seronegative rheumatoid arthritis
3. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
1. Seropositive Rheumatoid Arthritis
If the presence of rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide in the blood is positive it is known as seropositive rheumatoid arthritis. The positive blood test of RF or anti-CCP means there is a production of an immune reaction to normal tissue occurring in your body. With rheumatoid arthritis 60-80% of people are seropositive.
2. Seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis
If the presence of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide in the blood is negative but still has rheumatoid arthritis. It is known as seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. It is the milder form of rheumatoid arthritis. With rheumatoid arthritis 20% of people are seronegative.
3. Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
It mostly occurs in children younger than 17 years old. It may be temporary or permanent for a lifetime. It is an idiopathic arthritis. Also known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis
- In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system does not work properly and attacks the healthy cells of joints. It is triggered by any infection or smoking.
- When joints are attacked by the immune system it makes the area of the joint painful and causes swelling.
- It also occurs when environmental factors and genetic factors are combined.
- There is a greater chance of rheumatoid arthritis in overweight people.
- The risk of rheumatoid arthritis increases with smoking.

Ayurvedic Aspect of Amavata(Rheumatoid Arthritis)
In ayurveda rheumatoid arthritis is correlated with Amavata (rheumatoid arthritis). It is a vitiation of vata dosha. In this accumulation of vata dosha occurs in joints. Due to slow digestion, the formation of immature nutritional essence is formed and goes into circulation in unprocessed form. It cannot be metabolised since it is immature. They are neither digested nor flushed. Ama (undigested metabolic waste) blocks all the channels of nutrition due to its sticky nature. As a result, it causes damage to multiple tissues.
Samprapti (Pathophysiology) of Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
- Due to slow digestion or excessive eating, it produces ama (undigested metabolic waste).
- Aggravated vata pushes ama and moves ama (undigested metabolic waste) towards different sites of kapha.
- Then ama (undigested metabolic waste) enters into dhamanis and is contaminated by three doshas
- After contamination, ama becomes sticky and obstructs channels.
- It causes heaviness in the heart and ama may become a causative factor of many diseases.
- The aggravated vata and ama (undigested metabolic waste) enter the trika sandhi and other joints.
- The disease which produces stiffness and joint pain is called amavata.
Clinical Features of Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
- Aruchi- anorexia
- Shotha- inflammation
- Difficulty in movement
- Stiffness
- Pain
