Our spinal column is made up of 26 bones known as vertebrae which are cushioned by discs. These discs protect bones by absorbing the shock from daily activities like walking, lifting and twisting. Each disc has two parts – inner portion (soft) and outer ring (tough). Injury or weakness can cause the inner portion of disc to protrude through outer rings. This is known as slipped disc or herniated disc.
SYMPTOMS OF SLIP DISC
Symptoms of slip disc depend upon location and type of tissue involved in injury. Slip disc can occur in any part of spine from neck to lower back but the most common area is lower back for slipped disc.
If ruptured of disc has taken place in back (thoracic spine)
- Pain and numbness most commonly on one side of body
- Pain worsens at night
- Intense pain in lower parts of body include foot, thigh and buttocks
- Symptoms include muscle weakness, numbness, travelling pain, tingling, aching and burning sensation in affected area due to root irritation.

Diagnosis is made by practitioner based on history, symptoms and physical examination of patient.
Physical examination may include straight leg raise that is done to determine to low back pain during slip disc.
- X-Ray- to detect bone abnormalities.
- CT scan (computerized tomography) – which gives images and structure of spinal column.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) – to diagnose severe nerve damage.
- Myelogram- involves the injection of contrast dye into spinal cord.
CAUSES OF SLIP DISC:
Slipped disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weaken or torn and allows the inner portion to slip out. It may happen:
- With increase in age
- Certain motions like twisting or lifting an heavy object
- More common in men than women
- Genetic factor may be one of the reason in rare cases.
