What is Clubfoot? – Causes, Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

Abstract

Any problem in this world could be tackled easily, if the cause is known. For example, if someone is having a headache because of sunlight exposure, then it could be easily managed with some measures like wearing sunglasses, covering face or simply going out when the sun is comparatively less bright. But, what if some problem is there for which a particular cause is not known, then it might be a bit difficult to manage such conditions. In medicine such diseases which do not have a known cause are called idiopathic diseases. Today in our topic we are going to discuss one such idiopathic disease called clubfoot.

Clubfoot

Introduction

Clubfoot is a medical condition in newborn babies which is characterized by twisting of the foot out of normal shape. This is a congenital defect. This is a fairly common birth defect and usually both the feet are involved. Babies with this condition might face difficulty in walking that is why doctors recommend its treatment soon after birth.

Causes

As we discussed already there is not a specific cause known for this condition. This is an idiopathic condition. But according to some people it may be a combination of environmental and genetic factors.

Symptoms

There are no specific symptoms associated with the clubfoot. But there may be difficulty in moving because of the muscles of the affected limb’s muscles being shorter than the normal limb.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing clubfoot is not a big task and does not need any diagnostic tests. Only by looking at the shape and position of the foot of the newborn, a physician diagnoses it.

Treatment in allopathy

The options of treatment of clubfoot in allopathy are very limited. There are two methods available for correcting this condition.

  • Stretching and casting
  • Surgery

Ayurvedic point of view

In Ayurveda it is strongly believed that a mother’s behaviour and nature along with diet and regimen plays an important role in the healthy development of the fetus. If the environmental condition around the gestational mother is not maintained healthy then it could lead to complications. Clubfoot is believed to be a result of beej dushti which is there due to the dietary errors in the mother. For example alcohol consumption, smoking tobacco, consuming virudh aahar (incompatible food combination). All these lifestyle errors lead to tridoshas imbalance. And in the Ayurvedic system of medicine a disease is itself nothing but an outcome of imbalance in any of three doshas or all of them.
