Introduction of the Bartholin’s Cyst

The Bartholin is a gland present on each side of the vaginal opening.  These glands are responsible for the lubrication of the vagina and get filled up with its fluid. Sometimes the opening of these glands gets blocked and this makes the gland’s fluid back up into them. Then a cyst develops.

The cyst is soft and painless and doesn’t cause any problems. When this cyst gets infected it causes painful, pus-filled mass called an abscess. Sometimes this cyst grows to become very large and visible and starts to cause discomfort, interfering with sitting, walking.

Bartholin’s Gland cyst

Bartholin’s cysts generally occur on one side of the vaginal opening and also known as Bartholin’s gland cyst. The cyst is usually 2-4c in diameter and may cause dyspareunia, urinary irritation, and pelvic pain.

Ayurvedic Aspect of Bartholin’s Cyst

Ayurveda is a traditional and ancient form of medicine. It is a holistic approach to health. The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain a healthy person’s health and to alleviate disorders of the diseased. Ayurveda believes in maintaining health by balancing the mind, body, and soul. This balance can be maintained by the balance between Dosha, Dhatu, and Mala. Dosha are of three types each having its own dominating factors like Vata has Air dominating factor, Pitta has Fire dominating factors and Kapha has water dominating factors. The balance between these Dosha is known as a healthy state of body and imbalance of these Dosha can cause various health problems.

According to Ayurveda Bartholin’s cyst is known as Yonikanda. Yonikanda is a disease of the vulva or lower vagina. Ayurveda describes the cause of Yonikanda- is due to day-sleeping, excessive anger, exercise, and ulceration by nail, teeth or thorns, the Dosha aggravated due to their respective causes produce kanda (protuberant structure ) resembling in the shape to nikuca (rounded) or lakuca (an irregular shaped fruit) and in color to pus (yellowish) or blood (red).

Vataja yonikanda can be considered as an early stage of Bartholin’s abscess, Pittaja yonikanda as an acute suppuration stage, Kaphaja yonikanda as a chronic stage and Sannipataja yonikanda as acute suppuration in chronic Bartholin’s abscess. Purulent discharge can be seen after the bursting of an abscess.
