Ayurvedic Perspective of Eosinophilic Lung Disease/Pulmonary Eosinophilia

Abstract

Eosinophilic lung disease/ pulmonary eosinophilia is a condition in which basically there is the accumulation of eosinophils in the pulmonary pathway due to any of the associated conditions such as various infections, allergies, parasites, malignancies, autoimmune processes, obstructive lung diseases and various others. Lungs are considered as one of the most important organs for life as it supports our breathing. As each cell of the body needs an abundance of oxygen for living, that is only possible if our lungs work properly. The oxygen gets exchanged with the carbon dioxide present in the cells of the body which is the waste and can be eliminated with the help of lungs. So it is important to keep lungs healthy for maintaining overall health of the body. Let’s discuss further all the details of pulmonary eosinophilia and its ayurvedic management.

INTRODUCTION

Pulmonary Eosinophilia / Eosinophilic lung disease is a condition that is associated with the lodgement of the eosinophils in the lungs and the respiratory tract. This can occur due to any of the pathologies caused in the respiratory tract which further leads to an increase in the eosinophil and its accumulation. Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell and are part of the immune system. Eosinophils are usually built up with the reaction to any kind of infection, inflammation and allergen in the respiratory tract. As per ayurveda it can be correlated to the pranavaha sroto dushti, further we are going to discuss the causes, symptoms and diagnosis of Pulmonary Eosinophilia.

Eosinophilic Lung Disease/Pulmonary Eosinophilia & Its Ayurvedic Aspect

ABSTRACT

Every cell of the body requires an appropriate amount of oxygen to function properly. The demand of oxygen is fulfilled by the circulation of blood. The inhaled air contains oxygen, etc, which is processed into the bloodstream by the lungs. Hence, proper functioning of the lungs is very essential for proper functioning of the body cells. Any abnormality in the structure or functioning of the lungs will lead to the presentation of a variety of difficulties or abnormalities in the body. One such abnormality that adversely affects the lungs is eosinophilic lung disease or pulmonary eosinophilia. This condition will be described in detail along with its ayurvedic perspective in the following article.

Eosinophilic Lung Disease

INTRODUCTION

Eosinophilic lung disease is a group or category of lung diseases arising due to the increased levels of eosinophilia in the lungs.Eosinophilia is a term that refers to the increased levels of eosinophils. Eosinophils are a component of our blood, more specifically, the component of white blood cells. The main aim of these components is to fight off the infections. The eosinophils play a very vital role in the mechanism of the immune system. In cases of infection, we observe a raised number of the eosinophil count. When there are too many eosinophils in the lung, it causes inflammation and can disrupt the normal functioning of the lungs. There are eosinophils built up in the air spaces of the lungs, hence arising various difficulties which will be described later in this article. There can be various forms of this condition such as-

  • Acute condition – The acute state of eosinophilic lung disease is categorised when there is presentation of severe symptoms often, appearing suddenly, usually within a week.
  • Transient condition – This state can be categorised by an on and off condition. The symptoms may appear and disappear.
  • Chronic condition – The chronic condition is when the symptoms last for a longer duration of time, as long as upto or more than a month.

CAUSES OF EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

There could be various causes underlying the condition of eosinophilic lung disease which may vary from person to person. The most common causes could be an infection, allergic reaction, etc. It could also be a result of a reaction to some drugs such as anti inflammatory drugs or antibiotics, etc. In some cases, there is no known cause of the appearance of this disease. The most commonly observed symptoms will be various breathing related difficulties such as dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing), wheezing, cough, etc. The patient may also have other symptoms such as fever, coughing up blood or mucus, etc. He/she may also experience various muscular aches. The diagnosis of Eosinophilic lung disease will require some diagnostic tests which will be discussed as follows.

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT FOR EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

Various tests or techniques that will help to diagnose the condition of eosinophilic lung disease will require chest X- ray, CT scan, lung biopsy, lung function test, etc. Evaluation of lung fluid will also be done to confirm the diagnosis. As soon as the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment should be started. The line of treatment will include administration of various medicines such as corticosteroids which will help to reduce the inflammation in the lungs. If the condition is not managed by the medicines, full intensive care support may also be required to stabilise the condition. The ayurvedic perspective will be discussed as follows.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT ON EOSINOPHILIC LUNG DISEASE

The condition of eosinophilic lung disease can be considered as a result of prana veh srotas dushti.
