Alternative Treatment For Deviated Nasal Septum(DNS)

Abstract

A Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS] occurs when the nasal septum (thin wall of cartilage and bony composition, between right and left nostrils) is displaced from its normal position. Normally the nasal septum is straight leaving proper space for air passage in both nostrils to allow normal breathing. Obstruction can be seen in one nostril or both nostrils, depending upon the type of Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS]. We will have a look at various causes, symptoms, complications, and ayurvedic management for Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS].

Introduction

When the nasal septum deviates more to one or the other side making the nostrils passage smaller, that condition is termed a Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS]. It may obstruct airflow and make it difficult to breathe. This is a common disorder of the nasal septum. The nasal septum consists of bone posteriorly and the cartilage hyaline cartilage) anteriorly. Sometimes Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS] can be due to genetic connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome. Nasal obstruction can be partial or complete and unilateral or bilateral, depending on the type of Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS].

deviated nasal septum

It is of many types

  • Anterior dislocation
  • C shaped deflection
  • S-shaped deflection
  • Nasal spur
  • Thickening of the nasal septum

The severity of septum deviation is graded from mild to severe based on the extent of narrowing of nostrils and passage least for air passage.

Ayurvedic Aspect

We can correlate this Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS] condition with ‘Nasanah‘ in Ayurveda. Due to Kapha dosha aavrit Udan Vayu, the nasal passage is blocked and no passage of air or sneezing is allowed through that narrow passage. Basically, Vata dosha along with kapha dosha is responsible for Nasanah. The symptoms of nasanah are the same as those of Deviated Nasal Septum. For the management of Nasanah – snehpan, dhoopan (intake of herbs fumes), shirobasti, nasya (introducing medicated herbal oils in the nostrils), and dietary methods are practiced in Ayurveda. Medications used orally are described further in the article.

Causes

A Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS] can be caused by

  • Birth traumas
  • Conditions developed inside fetus
  • Injury to nose
  • The aging process (rarely)

  • Sleep on specific sides
  • Sneezing
  • Anosmia
  • Dyspnoea
  • Snoring
  • Pain in the nose radiating to facial muscles
  • Obstruction in one or both the nostrils

Diagnosis

Diagnostic methods used for the diagnosis of Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS] are

  • Physical examination
  • X-ray

Detailed view of Nasal passage is done with

  • Fiber optic nasal endoscopy

Complications

Untreated Deviated Nasal Septum [DNS] can cause various complications listed below –

  • Septal perforation
  • Epistaxis
  • Addle nose
  • Septal abscess
  • Septal hematoma

Alternative Treatment of Reiter’s Syndrome – Reactive Arthritis

Abstract

It is a painful inflammatory condition of joints due to an underlying infection in the body.  It was first described by Hans Reiter. It is equally common in both males and females but more common in sexually active males. A person with reactive arthritis mostly complains of difficulty in watching, urinating and walking. A person with HLA-B27 is more prone to this disease and there are very few people who come in contact with bacteria that get reactive arthritis. In this article, we will study about this in detail!

Introduction

Reiter’s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder. It occurs in response to an infection. It is called reactive arthritis because it occurs in response to a preexisting infection in the body (Gastrointestinal infection, genitourinary infection). It is characterised by a triad of Urethritis, Conjunctivitis and joint arthritis. It is seen in 1/3 of patients with Reactive Arthritis. The person faces difficulty in urinating, watching and walking. Inflammation in the urethra makes urination painful and conjunctivitis is not due to infection in the eyes but due to an autoimmune condition. Usually, the knees and joints of the ankles are affected. In reactive arthritis, antibodies cross over and attack normal body cells. It has a 50% recurrence rate. Reactive arthritis can be mistaken for gout, psoriatic arthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. So, it is very important to diagnose it properly and begin the management of the underlying infection along with Reactive Arthritis.

Reactive Arthritis

CAUSES

AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW

According to the Ayurvedic Point of view, Agantuj karan (exogenous causes like bacteria), leads to an imbalance in doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), agni (digestive fire) and causes ailments in the body. When these doshas get accumulated (Sthan sanshraya) in the eyes causes conjunctivitis, in the urethra leads to urethritis and in joints leads to arthritis. Tender and swollen joints, fever, weight loss, conjunctivitis, urethritis, mouth ulcers, penile sores, and pain during movement and urination are some of the symptoms of reactive arthritis.

TREATMENT

Management for Reactive Arthritis involves balancing all three doshas, agni and treating the underlying cause of the disease.

  1. Use of Chitrakadi vati, Lavan bhaskar churna, and Hing (Asafoetida) powder in order to remove ama from the body.
  2. Yogas (Formulation) like Yograja Guggul, Sanjivani vati, Giloy ghan vati, Erandpak, and Dashang lepa can be used to manage inflammation and pain in joints.
