Abstract

Our lifestyle plays a great role in maintaining our complete health. So eating right makes a lot of difference. So that our metabolic function should be up to the mark. Syndrome means a cluster of one or more disease conditions. Metabolic syndrome or syndrome X is a group of conditions that occur together, elevating the risk of cardiac disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. It is also known as insulin resistance syndrome and dysmetabolic syndrome. The conditions included in metabolic syndrome are high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, increased body fat around the waist, and an imbalance in cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Having only one condition does not mean you have metabolic syndrome but you might have certain serious complications. Here in this article, we shall be discussing all the aspects of metabolic syndrome, its causes, symptoms, and management in modern as well as the Indian system of medicine.

Syndrome X Or Metabolic Syndrome

INTRODUCTION

Metabolic syndrome is a syndrome in which there is a combination of heart disease, stroke, and noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus which is responsible for all the pathological conditions. A person is diagnosed with metabolic syndrome when he/she has three or more following conditions:

  1. High blood sugar levels
  2. Increased triglycerides in the blood
  3. High blood pressure
  4. Huge waist circumference (apple-shaped body)
  5. Low levels of good cholesterol (LDL)

As described each condition elevates the risk of cardiovascular disease but having more than three conditions increases the complication of cardiovascular condition and hence called metabolic syndrome. It may lead to fatty buildup in the arteries, the condition is known as atherosclerosis. The foremost common cause includes metabolic syndrome, physical inactivity, and faulty dietary habits that imbalance the triglyceride. The metabolism of a person is hampered hence it is called a dysmetabolic syndrome. It is also called insulin resistance syndrome since it is associated with hyperinsulinemia, uptake of the blood sugar is hampered due to cells becoming resistant to insulin. Metabolic syndrome or syndrome X is related to strotoavrodha (obstruction of stotras or channels) in the body and insulin resistance can be related to the kapha average.

RISK FACTORS

  • An obese person is at a higher site of risk especially carrying extra fat around the abdomen
  • It increases with growing age
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • People with Type 2 diabetes mellitus are more prone to metabolic syndrome
  • Other diseases like polycystic ovarian syndrome, alcoholic fatty liver, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are more prone to metabolic syndrome

COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME

  • If weight is not managed properly it will lead to insulin resistance type 2 diabetes mellitus, increases the blood sugar levels
  • High cholesterol and  high blood pressure contribute to plaque formation in the arteries which causes arteries to narrow and hardened which can lead to heart attack or stroke

 PREVENTION

  • Physical exercise at the latest 30 minutes
  • Controlling stress levels through yoga, pranayama, and meditation
  • Healthy weight should be maintained through lifestyle and dietary changes
  • Saturated fats and salts should be taken within limits
  • Smoking should be prohibited
  • Eating more proteins, whole grains, vegetables, and fiber

AYURVEDIC ASPECT AND MANAGEMENT

Ayurveda is an Indian system of medicine that existed thousands of years ago. It believes in holistic healing through nature and herbs. It is very effective in managing diseases by correcting their root cause. In ayurveda vitiation of strotas is responsible for the development of any kind of disease inside the body. Metabolic syndrome is related to shrotodhusti (vitiation of doshas). In any kind of disease nidan (causative factors) causes dosha dusty (vitiation) and these vitiated doshas get collected  in strotas (strotodhusti). And if favorable conditions occur, disease conditions arise. Vata dosha has a tendency to move frequently throughout the body in microchannels as well when dosha dust occurs, especially kapha dosha in metabolic syndrome the movement of vata ceases, giving the symptoms of kapha ovarian.

Management protocol of sorts dusti here involves cleansing of channels so that all the dosha work together in harmony and vata dosha restores its flowing nature. Some rejuvenation (rasayana) therapies are also helpful like shilajit & Guggulu (Comiphora mukul) along with milk can be helpful. Chyavanprasha is a rasyanic formulation according to ancient texts is also beneficial.

CONCLUSION

As we have already discussed syndrome X or Metabolic syndrome is in detail in this article. As metabolic syndrome suggests through its name dysfunction in metabolism. It starts with insulin resistance type 2 diabetes mellitus due to false dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle. This alters the lipid profile of the human causing unhealthy fat accumulation. When this accumulates in the arteries and along with hypertension it causes cardiovascular complications which in turn leads to stroke. One complication leads to another.

As in Ayurveda, this condition is known as proto dushti means blockage of microchannels, and increased kapha Dhatu causes Avaran thus obstructing the flow of vata dhatu. Therefore the management regime for Metabolic Syndrome is discussed which completely resolves the condition.

Let’s discuss!!

Introduction

Syndrome X is a bunch of health conditions related to resistance to insulin that include fat accumulation in the body, obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension. In other words, it can be said that it is a cluster of conditions that makes a person vulnerable to diabetes and heart disease. So metabolic syndrome is not a disorder itself but a group of risk factors. A person can be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome when she/he has three or more than that from the following:

Metabolic Syndrome

  1. Dyslipidemia
  2. Hypertension (increased blood pressure)
  3. Accumulation of fat at waist
  4. Decreased levels of good cholesterol (LDL)
  5. Increased blood sugar levels

Moreover, metabolic syndrome can build up plaque in the arteries which causes the clogging of the same which makes the arteries brittle. Formation of blood clots after damage to the arterial wall may block the major arteries which can result in stroke or heart attack.

Causes of Syndrome X

  1. Insulin resistance
  2. Obesity
  3. Unhealthy lifestyle
  4. Hormonal imbalance
  5. Smoking

  1. Obese person
  2. Risk increases with as the age increases
  3. Sedentary lifestyle
  4. People with diabetes mellitus type 2 are prone to develop metabolic syndrome
  5. People with Polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypertension, alcoholic fatty liver and dyslipidemia are vulnerable to Syndrome X.

Prevention of Metabolic Syndrome

  1. Physical exertion or exercises
  2. Doing meditation, yoga, pranayama etc helps in stress.
  3. Healthy diet and lifestyle management is necessary to be modulated.

Ayurvedic Aspect and Management of Syndrome X

Ayurveda, the traditional system of Indian medicine, has been serving mankind till date. Ayurveda is a natural science that manages the conditions purely on the herbal and mineral formulations. And it has marvellous results. It manages the dosha imbalance that is the main cause of diseases. There are various causes of development of a condition which includes sroto dushti, dosha imbalance, agnimandya etc. Metabolic Syndrome is related to sroto dushti. In every condition with the faulty dietary habits the doshas get vitiated mainly the kapha dosha and the ama formation leads to the clogging of the microchannels which is regarded as sroto dushti.

Vata dosha is responsible for the movements in the body as the sroto dushti occurs or the blockage of the microchannels occurs the movement of the vata gets hampered which gives the sign of kapha avaran. So the correlation of the metabolic syndrome can be well established with the sroto dushti by the kapha dosha. Ayurvedic management depends on the cleansing or unclogging or unblocking of the microchannels from the ama and vikrit kapha which has hampered the vata movements. So here we require the medicines that remove the ama and excessive kapha from the body that eventually will result in clear microchannels. Medicines such as arogyavardhini vati, chyawanprash, sanjivani vati etc are really helpful in metabolic syndrome.

Guggulu (Comminphora mukul), shilajit (asphaltum), vacha (Acorus calamus), neem (Azadirachta indica), amla (Embellica officinale) and various other herbs are effective in removing the sroto dushti  y cleansing the microchannels. Thus this all will help in Metabolic syndrome to the maximum.
