ABSTRACT

Transverse myelitis is the inflammation of the spinal cord of both sections. It is a neurological disorder which damages the insulating material on nerves. SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

Usually the signs and the symptoms last for a few days to a few months.

• Pain in the lumbar region. Sharp pain and the shooting pain which radiate to the lower limbs of the body. Sometimes the patient feels pain in the chest region.
• Abnormal sensations in the body like numbness, tingling sensations may be present. Sensations from hot and cold things may last for a long time.
• Weakness in arms and other parts of the body may be present. Sometimes patients get paralyzed.
• Trouble with urinary and bowel functions.

COMPLICATIONS

Following are the complications of this disease:

Sexual dysfuction is very common complication the male partner experiences ejaculation dysfunctining and feels difficulty to reach at orgasm. Patients sometimes feel depressed which can aggravate transverse myelitis. Pain is another important complication which may last for many days.

Medical history of the patient and physical examination is very important to diagnose this disease. MRI scan is a very important key to diagnose this disease. The test of cerebrospinal fluid is necessary to find out the severity of infection present in the localized area.
