Leptospirosis is a disease which is caused by the bacteria leptospira. Leptospira is a flexible, spiral shaped, gram negative spirochete with internal flagella. It enters the host’s body through mucous or through broken skin and thus results in bacteremia. Its spirochetes can affect multiple organs and the most common target is the central nervous system, kidneys and liver. The infective bacteria are then shed from kidneys in the form of urine and through the fecal matter or urine the infection can spread to humans as well.

Coming in contact with the urine of infected animals. The urine gets mixed with soil and water and this can survive in soil for months or much longer. Now, they get infected when they come in contact with such soil through skin cracks or through mucous membranes of eyes, mouth or nose.

Usually an antigen detection test is done with help of ELISA and this test has proven helpful in diagnosing the condition. Molecular tests are PCR, which is a polymerase chain reaction test for diagnosing this condition.
