Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease in which there is irritation in the large intestine (colon), inflammation as well as ulcer formation in colon. Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease i.e. white blood cells that usually protects the lining of the colon, may cause inflammation and ulcers. Inflammatory bowel disease is a disease in which there is chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. This disease is of two type’s i.e. ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s diseases. This disease can be a life threatening condition. Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease which starts from rectum and spreads to the colon or large intestine. The large intestine includes ascending colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon and the last portion of rectum is the large intestine. Ulcerative colitis not only hampers the physical and mental health of patient but also hampers sexual health. Due to Ulcerative colitis there is decrease in sexual desire in women and also erectile dysfunction in men. In Ulcerative colitis there may be diarrhea with blood, cramping, weight loss, fatigue and abdominal pain. Ulcerative colitis is not fatal, but may cause life threatening complications. Immune system dysfunctioning is the main cause of Ulcerative colitis. Treatment mainly includes steroidal use and diet modification as well as lifestyle management.
