What is Echolalia? – Symptoms, Causes and Ayurvedic Treatment


Every person has their unique identity and this makes them unique in a number of properties such as their personality, way of talking, way of addressing  and various other personality traits. This is often said that a person’s words affect the relationships and the way of communication can be a remedy as well can hurt a person in the deepest heart. Echolalia is the reiteration or reverberating of words or sounds that one hears another person say. It is a significant stage for language advancement in children.‌ Echolalia can exist as a conditio alone and can also indicate another pathology undergoing.  Echolalia can likewise be an indication of chemical imbalance or formative handicap in youngsters or neurological issues in grown-ups. These incorporate a stroke or mental problems like Tourette’s disorder. This condition can be compared with vata imbalance, beej dushti and aaghat janya character. Causes of Echolalia

  • Head injury or trauma
  • Confusion or delirium
  • Dementia or memory loss
  • Brain tissue inflammation or encephalitis
  • Damage to left hemisphere, particularly the frontal lobe of the left hemisphere
  • Echolalia exists in aphasia, schizophrenia, dementia, epilepsy, catatonia, cerebral infarction.
  • Other disorders that can have echolalia as a symptom include Pick’s disease, corticobasal degeneration, pervasive developmental disorder, progressive supranuclear palsy, frontotemporal dementia.
  • Echolalia is common in transcortical sensory aphasia.

  • Delayed or immediate repetition of phrases and noises after hearing it right away.

Types of Echolalia

  • Immediate echolalia : When the repetition of the words right away just after listening or hearing. A slight delay can be seen.
  • Delayed echolalia : The repetition usually occurs hours or days after hearing them. Normally this is found in persons with autism spectrum disorders.

In Ayurveda, Udana vata, a subtype of Vata dosha, is responsible for the speech. Vata dosha is responsible for all neurological functions including speech.

Though the condition can be due to injury, mental issues or any other factor but vitiation of vata dosha is constant in all of them because speech is a function of vata dosha and vitiation of the same results in Echolalia.

Echolalia, compulsive repetition of the words heard can be due to various factors including injuries or traumas. The condition of echolalia can also persist with underlying disorders. These can be mental disorders and psychological issues as well. A person can repeat the same to process the sentence in his mind and therefore this can be due to slow functioning of the brain and this can either be due to some pathological conditions. As per modern system of medicine there is no cure available for echolalia though speech therapy and use of SSRIs and antidepressants are done. But these medications exerts a negative effect on the mind and are not good for prolonged consumption.
