Abstract

Introduction

Glanzmann Thrombasthenia is a rare but serious platelets disorder in which there is abnormal bleeding from different parts of the child. The symptoms begin at birth or shortly after some time of the child’s birth. There is difficulty in getting blood to clot and the child becomes bruised or loses a large quantity of blood. This is an autosomal recessive condition and both parents need to have an abnormal gene in order to inherit it into their child. Untreated Glanzmann Thrombasthenia can lead to hemorrhages which may be a life-threatening condition.

Ayurvedic Aspect

We can correlate Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia with “Raktapitta” in Ayurveda. Raktapitta is a hemorrhagic disorder in which bleeding occurs from various parts of the body. The bleeding disorders according to Ayurveda occur due to an imbalance of tridosha and excess accumulation of Pitta dosha. This excessive pitta dosha contaminates the rakt (blood), which also toxicate the blood channels throughout the body. The Pitta dosha along with Vata and Kapha dosha causes the oozing of blood from the openings of the body that are characterized accordingly.

 Causes

• Glanzmann Thrombasthenia occurs due to the lack of protein (Fibrinogen) that is on the surface of platelets.
• The protein is essentially needed to join/clump the blood cells together. The absence of protein causes this disease. This lack of protein is caused due to various genital abnormalities and mutations.
• Autoimmune diseases
• Certain infections
• Leukemia

The cause of Raktpitta according to Ayurveda are

• Pitta dosha vardhak Aahar and Vihar
• Excess anger
• Consuming Katu (spicy), lavana (Salty), and amla (Sour) is excess in diet.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Glanzmann Thrombasthenia include abnormal Mucosal bleeding from different body parts in the child at birth or shortly thereafter birth. The infant tends to bruise easily with the following symptoms.

•  Gastrointestinal bleeding (bleeding anywhere in the GI tract)
