Treatment of Hydrocephalus With Herbal Remedies

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which fluid buildup is noticed in the cavities of the brain that are called ventricles. These ventricles are seated deep within the brain and due to accumulation of fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) the ventricles increase and put pressure on the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid normally flows in through the ventricles and bathes the brain and the spinal cord. But if this fluid is accumulated in the brain ventricles it puts too much pressure on brain tissue and hence causes damage. This damage of tissues can result in imparied brain functions and the impairment depends on the level of tissue damage. In this article we will discuss the hydrocephalus in detail, mentioning its causes, symptoms, types and ayurvedic treatment.

The term hydrocephalus is derived from the greek word ‘hydro’ which means water and ‘cephalus’ that means head. The water here refers to the presence of cerebrospinal fluid. The accumulation of CSF in the ventricles results in increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and also causes progressive enlargement of head, convulsions, tunnel visions and mental disability. Hydrocephalus can happen at any age but usually it occurs more frequently in infants and adults around 60 years and above.

The causes of hydrocephalus vary with age like in infants it is generally the result of injury to the head before or during birth, congenital defects, tumors of the central nervous system and infections before birth that affects CNS. On the other hand, in older patients (in older children and adults) it is generally the result of developmental defects, tumors of the brain or spinal cord, bleeding in the brain and injury to the brain.

Types of Hydrocephalus

  1. Communicating hydrocephalus
  2. Non communicating hydrocephalus
  3. Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)

1. Communicating Hydrocephalus

This type is also called as non-obstructive hydrocephalus. In communicating hydrocephalus the flow of cerebrospinal fluid is blocked after it exits the ventricles. In this form CSF can still flow between ventricles that remain open.

2. Non communicating Hydrocephalus

Non communicating hydrocephalus is also known as obstructive hydrocephalus and this generally occurs when the flow of cerebrospinal fluid is blocked. The blockage is generally seen in one or more narrow passages connecting the ventricles.

3. Normal pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)

This type typically affects people ages around 60 years. It can be the result of any injury or even stroke. Normal pressure hydrocephalus generally develops gradually, blocking the CSF drainage. It causes fluid buildup with time. After this the enlarged ventricles press the brain around the skull and thus causes symptoms. The NPH includes dementia, walking difficulties, slurred speech which are similar to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease making the diagnosis difficult. In most of the cases normal pressure hydrocephalus remains undetermined. Bleeding in the brain due to stroke, injury, tumor and infections like meningitis are its main causes. Such patients usually develop urgency and incontinence, walking difficulties, altered gait, cognitive challenges as the early symptoms of NPH.

Sign and Symptoms

The general sign and symptoms of hydrocephalus includes abnormal enlargement of head, recurrent nausea and vomiting of unknown type, sleepiness, irritability, sun setting eyes (downward deviation of eyes), seizures, increases urgency, incontinence in some cases, blurred vision, diplopia, poor gait, poor coordination, slow development in children and swelling of optic disc. In rare cases loss of memory, cognitive challenges, bulging fontanel and prominent scalp veins will be noticed. Generally the risk of hydrocephalus is increased by premature births, brain infections and hemorrhage.

In Ayurveda, hydrocephalus is correlated with upshershak. In ashtanga hridaya uttaratantra upshershak is understood as a condition in children. The cause of upshershak is believed to be vata prakopa in garbha (before birth). This vitiated vata gets its root in kapala and then it produces swelling similar to the colour of skin and remains painless. (A.H.Ut. 23/21)

  1. Computerized tomography showing enlarged spaces or ventricles of the brain.
  2. Chiari malformations (abnormality at the base of the brain where the spinal cord joins with the skull).
  3. Dandy walker syndrome (when the fourth ventricle is enlarged due to the partial or complete closure of the other ventricular outlets).

In modern medicine, the commonest method of Treatment of Hydrocephalusis surgical insertion of drainage systems called shunts. Another surgical procedure is also done known as endoscopic third ventriculostomy.Ayurveda explains that generally the upshershak reduces on its own. If it does not resolve then applying lepa made up of jaw, gehu, moong and ghrita is very beneficial. Rakta visravan is also done again and again, sudation with dashamoola kwatha is done.

For the management of hydrocephalus planet ayurveda also offers some of its herbal products. These products are made from the standardized extract of herbs and helps in pacifying vata and initiates the absorption of accumulated CSF.

Health is the most important factor that should be considered on priority. To keep the body in good health is our duty. Otherwise, we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. Sometimes there is not a balance with our health and this is due to an abnormality occurring inside the body. There are certain ailments that occur due to some kind of mutation in the DNA. These kinds of ailments have very serious consequences because these can cause permanent changes many times and this leads to destruction of healthy cells and tissues. One of the major problem that occurs due to mutation is Glomus jugular tumor. These kinds of problems can be managed in its starting stages with natural herbal treatment, Ayurveda. But to know about treatment, first we should have some knowledge about the disease and tumors.

A tumor is known as a neoplasm, an abnormal mass of tissues and cells which can be solid or fluid filled. A mass usually a kind of lump of at least 20 mm in diameter, with a nodule which is less than 20 mm at its widest point.

This tumor can be of three types

1. Benign or non-cancerous – This mass cannot spread. This is present only at one place. Generally these are not harmful but can press nerves, vessels that can cause bad impact on health. Examples of these are – uterine fibroids, adenomas etc.

2. Pre-malignant or pre-cancerous – this kind of tumors are not cancerous but can spread further. Examples of this are – dysplasia of the cervix, leukoplakia etc.

3. Malignant or cancerous – these are cancerous and spread to its surrounding. These grow fast. Examples of this kind are – carcinoma, germ cell tumor, leukemia etc.
These tumors can arise due to many reasons – the chemical exposure, radiations or high temperature etc. these causes change in genetic formulations which results in mutations.

Glomus jugular tumor is one the example of benign tumors that happens due to mutations.

Glomus jugular tumor is a kind of tumor that arises within the skull cavity. The area which is affected by this disease is jugular foreman. This jugular tumor starts its origin from the preganglionic cells which is present in the outer most layer of the jugular bulb.
This spreads along the least resistance pathways such as infralabyrinthine and infracochlear cell tracts, vertical infratubal segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA), petrous segment and then toward nasopharynx. The jugular bulb’s middle wall acts as a barrier in tumor spreading.Whenever this barrier is ruptured, tumor spreads towards lower cranial nerves. Inwards this spreads along the neck carotid foramen and the carotid sheath.

Glomus jugularetumoris the second most common temporal bone related tumor. This frequently affects females than males.

This problem is related with genetic mutations and the gene that is related with this ailment is SDHD gene. This is present on two regions PGL1 and PGL2 which is present on chromosome 11. The first germ line is identified is PGL1 location. The SDHD gene encodes the protein succinateubiquinone reductase subunit D. another gene is SDHC, which is present on PGL3 locus on 1q chromosome. There is one another mutation occurred on locus PGL4 present on 1p36 chromosome and the gene which is affected is SDHB. Generally, SDHD and SDHC are membrane bound proteins that anchor SDHB and SDHA.

So, the disease Glomus jugularetumor is due to mutation in one of the genes SDHB, SDHC and SDHD.

The main symptoms included are –

When tumor present inside skull or below the ear –

  • Tinnitus
  • Partial hearing loss

First is mind and the body are inevitably connected

Second is there is no power that stops mind to heal and transform the body ailments and aid healing.

Ayurveda believes that every person is made up of five basic elements – space, air, water, earth and fire. These elements combined to form three life energies that control body functioning. These energies known as doshas. Every person has a unique combination of doshas.

These doshas are

Vata – this is known to control basic functions such as cell divide, breathing, blood flow, heart function etc.

Kapha – this is known to control immunity, body strength, muscle growth and weight etc.

Pitta – this is known to control digestion, metabolism and digestive hormonal control.

The herbal formulations of multiple herbs possess tremendous properties to cure cancer. These herbs known to work on multiple biochemical pathways and influence several organ system. Herbs known to have anti-cancerous properties that help to improve body functioning and overall health.

In Ayurveda, there is two kinds of classes of cancer or can say tumor

granthi (minor neoplasm) and arbuda (major neoplasm). This is properly given in two ayurvedic classics – charaka and sushruta. In granthi, one or two of the three doshas are affected, due to which body becomes out of control but not too much harmful. There is still a hope that this can be normalized. But in malignant tumors, all the doshas are affected and this is very injurious to health.
According to Ayurveda, when pitta decreases, as we know pitta known to control metabolism, this leads to deranged metabolism and results in excessive tissue growth. The pitta is further known to aggravate vata and suppresses kapha. These both interact with one another to cause proliferation. The abnormal growth at specific organ (Ekadesavriddhi).

The disease Glomus jugularetumor is known to be by beja dosha (a dosha in which there is an impairment or mutation in a gene) and vata especially.

This can be managed through the mixture of fruitful herbs and their formulation.
